Reading through some comments, I only saw that all the gay characters are incredibly annoying stereotypes - especially the male gays are supposedly all big flaming queens. That true? Because if it is, I'll give the books a pass.

A lot of the characters are interested in fashion, and one gay male vampire does have an incredibly flashy sense of style but that's not all there is to his character. The only characters I've met so far that are really stereotypical are the main character's family, and they're just a stereotype of...rich Victorian people. All the characters have their comic relief moments, because it's a funny book. And it's getting better--both as a story, and with the queer characters, as each book goes on.

Personally I wish the stereotype for lesbians was that we were all mad scientists and badass spies. ;)

No, it's not.

There's one character who could accurately be described as a "flaming queen" (though he's a spymaster, and uses frivolity to deflect questions frequently, so how much of that is genuine and how much of it is meant to make people dismiss him as fucking ridiculous and thus harmless is open to interpretation), and another who's very concerned with fashion and appearances (which is actually not unusual given the social context of the books) and starts out as one of said spymaster's more successful proteges. The third gay male main character isn't someone who could reasonably be called flaming by any measure, and there are several supporting cast members who are gay or bisexual men, including a very strait-laced military man, and a deceased archaeologist/adventurer/monster hunter.
