OP

I've reconsidered my opinions on this.

Re: OP

Just curious - what caused your change of heart? It happened pretty quickly, it seems.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I change my mind about secrets the second I post them, but that wasn't really the case here. Like I said, it IS appropriate for the character and time period so I might have been judging too harshly. But also, I started reading the third book and I don't wanna spoil anything but it's just getting gayer and I love it.

Props for saying that.

I mean, you don't see OP's admit they changed their mind very often, and I personally think it's a truly cool thing to do (not changing your opinion - not necessarily - but changing it and then admitting it out loud). This doesn't have anything to do with the subject, I'm just impressed by your decisiveness, would be regardless of your point :)

I just put a hold on the first book at the library. So many people have gone on about this series on f!s that now I need to read it.

Good job guys.

I think you'll enjoy it! It's a really fun read :D

P.S. if anybody wants a quick rundown of the first book, here's one! http://blip.tv/chasingthemuse/wra-episode-30-soulless-5550247 ...I'm shamelessly promoting my fiance, I guess. But he offers a few passages from the book, a rundown on what's good about it, and a little explanation of steampunk as a genre.

OT question about the books

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard this series is reeeeally heavy on telling you the female main character is superstrongamazingawesome unlike all other girls the other female characters who are silly dumb vapid slutty sluts who you're supposed to hate. I find it hard to believe a series like that would be as popular among F!S members as it apparently is, so... anyone want to elaborate? Have I been misled?

Re: OT question about the books

[personal profile] truxillogical 2013-05-09 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I never got the impression that they emphasize how strong or awesome she is. She is a better person than her stepmother/stepsisters, who are mild (and in one instance, not-so-mild) antagonists for a very brief time. Her best friend is a little bit silly. Okay, very silly. And she comes off as vapid, but she's really just the sort of person who likes being pleasant and fun and looking at the best parts of life, and she's a much stronger character than just "a silly girl." Her other closest friend is a complex, dynamic woman, and there are several other lady characters in the books, not a single one of whom could possibly be described as "a slutty slut."

Also, out of all the leads there's like, one, maybe two straight characters. It's not "hit you over the face" with it (mostly?), it's just kind of nice to see a book where characters can be not-straight and that's okay and not even a huge deal to them.

Re: OT question about the books

[personal profile] caecilia 2013-05-09 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
No, I don't think so. This isn't really a spoiler since it's on the back of the book, but the main character actually has no soul, and she's the only one of her kind that she knows (the only other that she knows of is her father, who she never met), so she really IS different from everyone around her (usually, she comments on her lack of imagination). Her sisters and mother are portrayed as vapid, but I think that's more of a commentary on Victorian high society. There are plenty of well-written female characters--Ivy Hisselpenny is my favorite although she's probably not the best example because she's sort of comic relief (at least so far, I'm just gonna go ahead and say that I'm the OP of this secret and yeah, I'm only on book 3, but she does have a pretty strong influence on the story). But there are other female characters who play a crucial role in the part. Also, it's hilarious and full of action and basically the best.

[personal profile] lunabee34 2013-05-09 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think you've been misled. I think pretty much all the ladies in the book are portrayed as having their own strengths. Even Ivy, who could be called vapid (although not slutty) possesses a well of fortitude and is a true friend to the main female character. I don't get the impression that you're supposed to hate any of the characters actually.

ETA: I did forget to mention that her mother and her step-sisters are vapid and awful, but I see them as riffs more on characters that are traditionally included in Victorian literature than anything else. They are not substantive characters.

OP of question thanks you all for the answers

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'll have to give the books a try when I have the time :)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Reading through some comments, I only saw that all the gay characters are incredibly annoying stereotypes - especially the male gays are supposedly all big flaming queens. That true? Because if it is, I'll give the books a pass.
caecilia: (i have a thing for red stripes)

[personal profile] caecilia 2013-05-09 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of the characters are interested in fashion, and one gay male vampire does have an incredibly flashy sense of style but that's not all there is to his character. The only characters I've met so far that are really stereotypical are the main character's family, and they're just a stereotype of...rich Victorian people. All the characters have their comic relief moments, because it's a funny book. And it's getting better--both as a story, and with the queer characters, as each book goes on.

Personally I wish the stereotype for lesbians was that we were all mad scientists and badass spies. ;)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not.

There's one character who could accurately be described as a "flaming queen" (though he's a spymaster, and uses frivolity to deflect questions frequently, so how much of that is genuine and how much of it is meant to make people dismiss him as fucking ridiculous and thus harmless is open to interpretation), and another who's very concerned with fashion and appearances (which is actually not unusual given the social context of the books) and starts out as one of said spymaster's more successful proteges. The third gay male main character isn't someone who could reasonably be called flaming by any measure, and there are several supporting cast members who are gay or bisexual men, including a very strait-laced military man, and a deceased archaeologist/adventurer/monster hunter.
