After being in the "Neon Genesis Evangelion" fandom for 14 years, I'm not so sure about that ;) Shinji is in a similar situation, suffers from depression and anxiety and people call him a "pussy".

A realistic portrayal of a teenager/person thrown into war, while having personal demons and issues just never clicks with the majority of the audience, it appears :/

The reason I feel the way I do is that if Katniss were male, she would fit the "brooding serious guy" type that seems to get a lot of respect and love from fandoms. Since she isn't, she's getting labeled a bitch instead.

You bring up a fair point too, though. It could be that my own experiences have trained me to see the sort of thing I'm seeing now.

I do agree with your point, people usually tend to see male, brooding characters in a WAY better light than female characters. I think there are only a few exceptions (Squall Leonhart from FF8 doesn't seem to have that many fans)...

idk, fandom picks and chooses who they love or hate. Sometimes it's the girl, sometimes the guy.

I think the only fandom I've been in so far that has been accepting and loving of ALL female characters involved is the "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" fandom. Other than that, I've never seen it happen.
