But I agree with you. Before the film came out, I saw more Katniss hate than Peeta hate (though there was plenty of that). I think a little bit of Katniss' current popularity might come from being played by Jennifer Lawrence, who everyone seems to like.

And that's a good point, about Jennifer Lawrence. I'm sure she helped a lot with Katniss's popularity, because from the book alone a lot of people seemed to hate her.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 12:48 am (UTC)(link)I think if Katniss was a guy and Peeta a girl, it would pretty much be your standard story structure, and everyone would say, 'why can't we have something different?'
So instead, when we have a hard Katniss and an empathetic Peeta, people come out of the woodwork to say, 'I don't like her, she's mean. And also, she doesn't bounce back in the heroically heroic way the heroes always do in stories.'
Just can't win.

A realistic portrayal of a teenager/person thrown into war, while having personal demons and issues just never clicks with the majority of the audience, it appears :/

You bring up a fair point too, though. It could be that my own experiences have trained me to see the sort of thing I'm seeing now.

idk, fandom picks and chooses who they love or hate. Sometimes it's the girl, sometimes the guy.
I think the only fandom I've been in so far that has been accepting and loving of ALL female characters involved is the "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" fandom. Other than that, I've never seen it happen.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)The fact it's flipped gender ratio is a bonus
