I agree. It feels like a ridiculous double-standard to me. I swear if she was a guy and Peeta was a girl, people would praise Katniss up and down and hate Peeta.

People praise Katniss up and down while hating Peeta NOW. Her fans vastly outnumber her critics.

I need to meet these people, then. All I ever hear is how bitchy she is.

Give me a break. She's a modern classic female protagonist. Tons of people love her. If you're having trouble finding people like that, you're not looking.

Someone's chipper today.

I can't help it. I was like you, once... young, in love and full of uncontroversial opinions about popular media. I got so angry at people who didn't like my favorite characters that it blinded me to all the other people who agreed with me completely! But I got past that. It's a wonderful feeling and I just wanna share it with the world.

Your words are saying one thing...your tone is saying something else...

I appreciate the sarcasm, I do. It amuses me. I apologize for not having any anger associated with my opinion, though. It's just something I'm used to seeing. I'm afraid that having experiences opposite from mine doesn't actually make you any more mature than me.

Looks like you attracted your very own troll! And/or professional contrarian.

But I agree with you. Before the film came out, I saw more Katniss hate than Peeta hate (though there was plenty of that). I think a little bit of Katniss' current popularity might come from being played by Jennifer Lawrence, who everyone seems to like.

Indeed! They're fun. :3

And that's a good point, about Jennifer Lawrence. I'm sure she helped a lot with Katniss's popularity, because from the book alone a lot of people seemed to hate her.

I think she's awesome and I've regailed her a few times on FS! I just normally avoid the fuck out of the THG fandom since it's all about the (nonexistant imo) love triangle and I've been too busy to spam FS with comments on any HG secrets

-da btw, a tired tired da

Nice to meet you! Yeah, that's generally why I avoid the fandom, too.

I swear if she was a guy and Peeta was a girl, people would praise Katniss up and down and hate Peeta.

I think if Katniss was a guy and Peeta a girl, it would pretty much be your standard story structure, and everyone would say, 'why can't we have something different?'

So instead, when we have a hard Katniss and an empathetic Peeta, people come out of the woodwork to say, 'I don't like her, she's mean. And also, she doesn't bounce back in the heroically heroic way the heroes always do in stories.'

Just can't win.

Ah. A fair point.

After being in the "Neon Genesis Evangelion" fandom for 14 years, I'm not so sure about that ;) Shinji is in a similar situation, suffers from depression and anxiety and people call him a "pussy".

A realistic portrayal of a teenager/person thrown into war, while having personal demons and issues just never clicks with the majority of the audience, it appears :/

The reason I feel the way I do is that if Katniss were male, she would fit the "brooding serious guy" type that seems to get a lot of respect and love from fandoms. Since she isn't, she's getting labeled a bitch instead.

You bring up a fair point too, though. It could be that my own experiences have trained me to see the sort of thing I'm seeing now.

[personal profile] toshi_hakari 2013-05-10 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I do agree with your point, people usually tend to see male, brooding characters in a WAY better light than female characters. I think there are only a few exceptions (Squall Leonhart from FF8 doesn't seem to have that many fans)...

idk, fandom picks and chooses who they love or hate. Sometimes it's the girl, sometimes the guy.

I think the only fandom I've been in so far that has been accepting and loving of ALL female characters involved is the "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" fandom. Other than that, I've never seen it happen.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, I go by people types. So I'm not keen on Peeta and love Katniss :D
The fact it's flipped gender ratio is a bonus

Yessss. And also, very nice to meet you!
