(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)it was that the people she seems to approve of and the people she decides aren't worth it are so arbitrary. the biggest example for me was her immediate dislike of effie but her decision that cinna is a good guy, despite both of them working for the capitol and both of them having jobs related to the hunger games.
there's other things, too, like her idolization of her father but cold opinion of her mother, and the fact that she snarks about the district 1 girl's outfit and makeup, that are annoying, as well as her hatred of the career tributes (who are fighting for their lives too, regardless of whether they've trained for it or not), especially because many of the things katniss says in her narration are supposed to be things that ~everyone thinks.

For me, her approval of Cinna and dislike of Effie made sense. Cinna was very sympathetic toward her circumstances, whereas Effie was not. Effie was not a terrible person, but she's an immature adult, turning a blind eye to the travesties the Capitol wreaks and lives in her own little world (which is similar to how Cinna's helpers act, and Katniss doesn't like them at first either, but they eventually grow on her, and she ends up rescuing them).
Also, I'm much closer to my mother than my father, so I've never really related that much to "daddy's girls," but Katniss' idolization of her father and cold opinion of her mother make sense. Katniss' father died when she was very young, so she's probably only going to remember good things about him. Her mother, on the other hand, completely shuts down after her father's death, when both Katniss and Prim were very vulnerable, so it makes sense that she would be a bit cold toward her. However, she also ends up becoming closer to her mother and admiring her talents and capabilities when it comes to being a doctor.
Katniss' hatred of the Careers also makes sense, imo. People have a tendency to dehumanize people and to treat them as "others" in times of war and strife. Katniss never struck me as the character who analyses things. She goes on gut feelings, and what she thinks is wrong. Another character would immediately be able to see that the Careers are also to be pitied, but it takes her a bit longer to realize this.

It's easy to understand why she idolizes her father. He was a good man and now he can't make a mistake. Most orphans in her situation have the same reaction. But her mom had a deep depresion after her husband died and Katniss and Prue would have died if Katnis wouldn't have taken care of the family when she was only a kid. I don't blame Katniss' mom for having a depression, of course, but it's easy to understand too why Katniss resents her a little. She's only a teenager in the end and she doesn't even have the same information about that sickness that we have now.
In the case of the career tributes, they choose to fight for their lives. They want to be tributes. No wonder Katniss doesn't like them.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)Seriously, wow. I can't understand how anyone could hold such ridiculous opinions after actually having read the books.

I don't think it's the fans of the book who are completely into the love triangle, but the movie played it up like it was the Most Important Thing, ignoring a lot of the political commentary to make it watered down enough for a younger audience.

Yes, I agree. She's harden. She's a serf under the control of a cruel and powerful master who thinks everyone is disposable at his whim. Not exactly a lot of joy in that. That would make anyone hard. Given what we've seen in the books, it's Peeta who is the oddball. Not Katnis.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 12:51 am (UTC)(link)I can't stand when people go on about Peeta, Gale or even Finnick and don't care to mention Katniss. Katniss was what atracted me to these books, what hooked me, what feels so special about them.
Besides I can't understand Peeta's fans, he's just so boring to me...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 02:14 am (UTC)(link)It's why I ship her so hard with Peeta, actually; their differences compliment each other really well. His gentleness (without being spineless) soften her ruthlessness, and her realism compliments his idealism.

Anyway, I loved how JLaw portrayed Katniss' personality in the movie because that's how removed yet still connected/aware of what was going on I imagined her. I didn't see her as a bitch, but I did find some of her inner monologuing annoying. She wasn't devoid of personality altogether, but since it was in (not very well-written) first person I can see how some people could get that.
