I feel the same way about that really popular 50 Shades fic at Yuletide, the one that a lot of people liked, commented (positively) and recced (and most of them said they never read the book). I tried reading 50 Shades. I hate it. But I wouldn't write a fic for someone that actually likes the book and throw in some social justice cliches to try and "improve" on the material, and that's why I dislike the really popular 50 Shades Yuletide fic.

I don't think most fans outside of people on tumblr who use the term "feels" copiously really like the series. It's kind of like Alone on the Water. There are enough people raving about it to make it seem like everyone likes it but in reality most people with taste just kind of ignore it.

Odd, SJ would be just about the last demographic I'd expect that from. Most of the criticism I come across complaining about 'rape is the new dead parents' is from social justice types.

tbh I'm really surprised Fanfiction_TXT hasn't quoted it yet. Some of the dialogue I've come across is really cringe worthy. (Then again, Fanfiction_TXT has yet to really quote stuff from AO3, so...)

Wait, rape is the NEW dead parents? I thought it was just as old hat as dead parents were. o__o I mean, ten years ago (when I was in high school) it was still overwhelmingly used to add dramazzz to a character's background, just like dead parents, abuse, mental illness, and probably others I'm not thinking of/didn't encounter. When did badfic writers STOP using it?

I tried to read it and didn't get past... chapter one, I think? Either way, I didn't like the writing style, I don't think I lasted long enough to actually know what all is in the plot.

That one's ALWAYS mentioned when people are talking about the worst of fanfic/fanfic tropes in places like avengersanon and FFA. You are far from alone, and there have been many long discussions about how bad it is.

That fic is so fucking bad it's a trainwreck. I have a hard time believing anyone actually likes it unless they just really love badfic.

And I love badfic, but I couldn't get through more than 5 or 6 chapters of that crap.
