'TIS THE SEASON FOR SEASON FINALES!!!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-13 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Those of you in TV show fandoms whose season finales are airing soon/just aired recently -- how are you holding up? Were the finales that already aired good? Bad? Disappointing? Mixed? Raise more questions than they solved? Blow your mind?

For the season finales that are coming up soon but haven't aired yet -- are you excited? Apathetic? Eager to see it? Dreading it? Have questions/mysteries/cliffhangers that need resolving? Have any particular hopes for what will happen in it that you're crossing your fingers for?

The Mentalist ended on an ominous note, but I'm just grateful nothing too bad happened, it looks like they might finally be wrapping up the Red John arc, and now we have a proper mystery to actually talk about re: the 7 suspects.

Loved the Person of Interest finale. I am hoping that the phone calls to Root and the one on the street (which I am sure is for Reese and not Finch) means that the 24 hour Ask a Question/Get an Answer window window was a process to get the Machine to imprint on a human. So that the Machine would not be alone after it was freed. And now the Machine is imprinted on the both of them. Because what interesting "parents" those two would make on what is basically a high tech god.

Once Upon a Time: Baelfire is a roach. You can't kill him. Oh, and I was disappointed we didn't get to see Pan. A whole summer to wait until we see him. Bummer.

I LOVED IT TOO. And I loooove your idea of the machine imprinting on new "parents" so to speak, because I love the idea of it being a conscious entity so much.

I think Person of Interest was the only finale this season that actually blew me away. It was excellent. Everything else has been pretty meh. I'm glad that Baelfire is still alive (though not surprised) and pleased that the main characters will be out of Storybrooke again next season, but...that's about all I took away from the finale.

I have rock-bottom expectations for the Doctor Who season 7 finale. Moffat will probably just try to top The Wedding of River Song for overstuffed insanity and hope he gets away with exploding people's minds rather than writing something good, because the episodes he's written for season 7 so far...really haven't been good, and I don't see why that will change for the finale.

I really wish he had done just one two-parter this season, for the finale. I don't want all the Big Revelations to be stuffed into 45 minutes. :(

If there anyone left who is like DOCTOR WHO IS PERFECT!!! MOFFAT IS THE GREATEST! Because all I am hearing is how bad it has become. I am still a few episodes behind because, yeah, I think it has become bad. And not in a fun, cheesy way like RTD used to make them but just plain dull. I always thought that RTD couldn't write sci-fi even if you beat black and blue with a copy of War of the Worlds but Moffat is even worse. What is with BBC and not giving their sci-fi shows to, you know, people who know how to write sci-fi/fantasy?

Re: 'TIS THE SEASON FOR SEASON FINALES!!!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the people who hate it are the most vocal, but actually quite a lot of people think it's just fine. However, the ratings have noticeably dipped this half-season.

I think one of RTD's strengths was that he was very good at integrating his characters with the stories of guest writers who actually did know how to write sci-fi (see: most of the best episodes of season 1-4). Moffat isn't, because his overarching plots are too intrusive and his characters and themes are too thin.

I'd say your criticism is a teeny bit harsh though. RTD could do a good job at writing a few forms of sci-fi -- very soft and fantastical (Gridlock, Utopia) and human-issue-centric (Children of Earth). And Moffat was excellent at coming up with concepts and mysteries -- as long as his scope was very limited and RTD+other writers had done all the characterization legwork beforehand so Moffat could focus on the trappings of the story and didn't have to embarrass himself trying to come up with the story's meaning.

"I always thought that RTD couldn't write sci-fi even if you beat black and blue with a copy of War of the Worlds but Moffat is even worse."

Not sure about RTD but wasn't Moffat a sitcom/soap opera writer before DW?

And both of them have needed a hefty smackdown with a boxed collector's edition of 1984 for decades imo.

"Decades"? The show hasn't been written by them for "decades". What did they do "decades" ago that needed a smackdown?

This makes me sad too. I'm quite excited about this finale because I'm really interested in the tablet mythology.

Nothing I watch has ended yet, but I'm looking forward to the Arrow finale. I know that nothing surprising is going to happen, but I want to see who is going to die. If they really wanted to do something unexpected, it would be Laurel and Tommy, but most likely it will be Merlyn Sr. and then Tommy can go evil.

Ah damn, the only current show I'm following is Doctor Who. I am quite certain the finale will be either terrible or so overstuffed that it seems terrible, so I'm lowering my expectations and mainly having fun drawing up a scorecard of bugfuck insane crack theories about the mystery resolutions. You know, like the ones people drew up for A Good Man Goes To War:

So yeah, the correct answer to everything is "Omega was behind it all, LOL@U Seven, you're still fucked!"

I really liked Revenge's season finale. It had a good pace, cleared up some plot threads, and created enough new ones to hopefully make season 3 more interesting than season 2.

OUAT's was okay, and Glee was Glee and I've accepted that.

Edit: Oh and I'm worried for Hannibal's season finale. I really hope it's not the series finale. I love it.

Overall, as an episode, I did enjoy Revenge's season finale. But I'm not sure how I like the Charlotte-pregnancy plot line. And I agree I hope this makes season 3 more interesting than season 2 (it was such a jumbled mess this season!!!) and I really hope the show doesn't go more than 4 seasons because most shows lose their pacing by that point.

Re Charlotte: Yeah, I don't know either. They already forgot about Jack's son in the finale, so I have no idea how they'll work in another baby. Charlotte's already been through so much as well and season 3 is going to be even more tough.

I think 4 seasons would be good as well. To me, Revenge doesn't have enough umph to last for 10 seasons. Plots would get old real fast. I also think Emily would run out of revenging to do.

The show was set up too narrow to last ten seasons, where it focuses solely on Emily's revenge and her character. I mean, look at the disaster of the first of season 2. Her mother is alive ,the flopping between what to do with Daniel, the introduction of Aaden and Padma.

If it wasn't for a friend telling me to catch up and keep watching, I would have given up on Revenge. I'm glad I didn't because the last few episodes have been good.

Fuck HIMYM with a rusty tentpole

I'm praying for How I Met Your Mother's season finale will finally just Put. A. Stop. To. All. The. Bullshitting.

Dallas's was pretty awesome, I thought. It resolved a bunch of things (and in a satisfying way imo) but also set up some stuff for next season.

Community's I thought would've been disappointing as a series finale, but as a season finale, eh, whatever. I didn't love it but I'm mainly just really happy it's coming back next year.

As for the ones coming up, I'm ridiculously excited for Elementary's. I'm kind of nervous about how they'll handle certain things but I'm also really curious to see what happens. There's a theory that I and a bunch of other people thought made a lot of sense but apparently there are spoilers that contradict it. I still think it's possible, but either way I can't wait to see what happens.

The only other show I'm really liking right now is Chicago Fire, and I am looking forward to the finale. I'm not insanely excited or anything because I don't expect anything huge to happen but I'm thinking a couple things will be resolved and some stuff will be set up for next season so hopefully it'll be pretty good.

There are a few others that have already aired or are coming up that I've either watched or will watch but nothing I'm super invested in.

DALLAS ANON THAT IS NO LONGER ANON, YOU ARE HERE!!!

I wish I was looking forward to Elementary's finale, but I'm tired of Moriarty and Irene. I love the show but so far the individual cases are way more appealing to me than the story arc stuff.

I don't even know why I'm looking forward to it so much, honestly. The individual elements aren't anything I find all that interesting (I'm kind of indifferent to Moriarty and I'm somewhat worried about how they'll handle the Irene stuff) but for some reason overall I'm really excited for it. I don't know, I guess I'm just weird!

Nah, you aren't weird. Maybe you're just pumped at the thought of something new and unexpected. Some season finales pull out all the stops so maybe you're hoping it'll be epic. That's normal!

I don't have any expectations right now so I'm hoping that helps.

I'd like to hear this Elementary finale theory. It's the only show on TV rn that I'm actually enjoying.

(Graying this out for anyone who doesn't even want to see speculation)

Based on various things that happened in the last episode, some people are thinking that Sherlock has slowly been losing his mind and/or has been drugged, and that Irene in the last scene is a hallucination. She didn't turn around until he said her name despite the fact that they must've been making noise, it wasn't completely clear if Joan even saw her, he mentioned earlier in the episode something about having a weird taste in his mouth (possibly from being drugged), the way that final scene was shot and how the music was used seemed almost kind of dream-like/not quite real, and a bunch of other things that I can't remember right now.

Now, actual (semi) spoilery stuff based on an interview with one of the actors: There's an interview with Natalie Dormer where she talks about how she played the character and mentions that Irene was held hostage all this time, and a lot of people are taking that to mean she definitely exists/is still alive, but I don't see where that really means anything. I mean, even if he's losing his mind/on drugs/whatever and she's a hallucination I'm sure he'll have come up with some backstory in his head to explain her sudden reappearance.

Plus I also read that here's a twist to the Irene story that people won't see coming, and I think this would fit. I haven't rewatched the last episode yet to see if the theory really holds up, but I want to.

So I don't know. It probably won't happen but I think it could be interesting if done right. And even though I'm excited for the finale I have mixed thoughts and am not looking forward to Irene being alive and the happy couple running around looking for Moriarty with Joan nowhere to be seen (or at least that was the impression I got from the preview) but I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.
