The reason that I can see the appeal of ships involving Draco and a protagonist is that in the books, it seemed like Draco was going to experience a character arc that JKR decided halfway through the series not to give him. Based on the first couple of books, it seemed likely that Draco was going to Learn A Valuable Lesson and grow as a person as his experiences challenged his preconceptions and prejudices, and he would develop into someone worthy of respect. That would have made it really interesting to ship him with one of the protagonists. Even though that redemption arc didn't happen in the books, well... that's one of the things fanfiction is for: exploring interesting possibilities that didn't happen in canon.

Hmm, that's true. I think a Redemption Arc could have been interesting, but, unfortunately, Draco is just a spineless racist coward in canon. If you have an fic recs where a Redemption Arc is done well, tell me, and I'll try them out! :)

There's A Year Like None Other. Plot: Snape ends up adopting both Harry and Draco, and Draco has a long redemption. Super long fic, but it's one of my favorites.

Pretty much off-topic

For a supposed Episcopalian, Rowling really pushed the neo-Calvinist stuff hard, didn't she? Slugworth counts as a good Slytherin, and I guess Snape eventually did so too, but at the point where I gave up caring about the series, pretty much everyone else was stuck in the life path they'd been set upon by the Sorting Hat.

I actually like that it didn't. Draco as he ended up was so much more interesting than epic-cliche-redemption-arc-Draco.
