Faith & nonfaith
(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 03:06 am (UTC)(link)Religion, and especially the Christian religions, are a huge profit machine. You can't really go anywhere without seeing tons and tons of religious books, books on the afterlife, books on faith healing, clothing, candles, cross jewelry, those tents people go to where a man dances around and touches sick people, Christian mediums, and so on-Christianity is pretty much a million dollar industry.
You can respect something and take influences from something and still not believe in it. You can also profit off of something you believe in as well. I know there's this huge outcry against 'atheists/agnostics' now, that they're disrespectful and whatnot-but that view is based heavily on the loudest part of a group of people that are lumped together for simply lacking faith. I don't really understand why it's okay to say all atheists/agnostics are closed minded and hateful, and then turn around and yell at someone for saying the same thing about, say, Christians, based solely on the most vocal/hateful of the bunch.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 06:13 am (UTC)(link)On the internet, in more open social circles that aren't hyper-conservative playlands like yahoo comments, I have not really seen this happen in reasonable conversation? I also haven't really seen a huge outcry against atheists and agnostics anywhere, but that might just be my internet filters failing.
Being non-christian I tend to get caught in the cross-fire sometimes between ex-christian!atheists and christians sometimes, and admittedly the experience has left me somewhat jaded. Though I try not to generalize, and I think religion is really important for the same reasons you do, so I'm happy when other people take an interest in it regardless.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)First off, many of the people criticizing atheists on f!s and other nerdy internet places are themselves atheists or agnostics. I know I've criticized atheists and I'm an atheist. So it's more complicated than "all atheists are bad and intolerant."
Second, I think the problem is that (except for the dumbass SJW critique of atheism) people are mostly criticizing a certain community of atheists - a certain kind of intolerant, brash atheist, the kind who tends, for instance, to claim that anyone who believes in religion is necessarily unintelligent or totally irrational. The problem is they usually just say "atheists" because there's no easy name to distinguish between different kinds of atheists (there's 'New Atheism' but that sucks). So it's unfortunate but it tends to sound like they're criticizing atheism generally when they're really criticizing some things that atheists do. Whereas I think there are some atheists - and obviously it's not all of them - but there are some atheists who, when they're criticizing religion, really do seem to apply that critique to all people who are religious whatsoever (or at least all Christians or what-have-you).
So, I mean, yes, sometimes people criticize atheism on here, but I really don't think it's the same thing at all. And really, what the fuck do you expect to happen when you say shit like some atheists say? I mean, come the fuck on, people.
