Not being intellectual doesn't mean it's bad. You seem to be reacting less to the movie and more to people you see talking about it who annoy you.

Personally, I think it's a really frustrating movie - it has a ton of cool action shit, stylistically it's awesome, but it's like an hour too long, and no matter how well stylized something is, you can't just keep going at the same ponderous immense pace for that long and expect to have a successful action movie.

I didn't think the movie was really trying to be intellectual. But I agree with all of these criticisms.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
What was the most underreated?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that this movie was pretty awful. The whole intellectual/philosophical bit felt very High School to me. That is, not very intellectual and nothing really new.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
But it brought me plenty of A/E, so it's okay.

This should be in the failbar under Not!Secret, no?

Pfft, I was just there to ogle Cillian Murphy. I'm more bothered by people misusing the term inception as it's used in the film, to be honest.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
You mean, using 'inception' to mean the opposite of extraction, rather than just a word meaning 'beginning/start'?

OK.

As someone who loves the movie I don't think it's the smartest movie ever, but it's a really good mix of being a fun heist movie and a movie that has some interesting ideas. Some people get really confused while watching it when it makes a lot of sense to me (though I've seen it multiple times at this point).

But yeah it's cool if you don't like things. :|

I agree that it is nowhere near as complex as a lot of people seemed to make it out to be but I enjoy it as a heist movie and the twisty, interesting visuals. They had a lot of good sets to play with.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* I really only watched it so I could understand the slash fic.

I enjoyed the visuals in the film, and the men in really, really hot suits...

Other than that I do find it kinda overrated, but I get why people like it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed watching it, even came out of it with a few ships (Cobb/Saito, Arthur/Ariadne, Eames/Fischer). I just have problems with the massive amounts of fridge logic you get afterwards, when you actually stop to think about it and you realise that either (hopefully) it's all in Cobb's head, or it's a dystopia where every dreamer in the movie is teetering on the brink of permanent divorce from reality, and there's no way for them to check. Particularly the architects, so if this isn't in Cobb's head then he just brought Ariadne into a world where she'll be lucky to come out with her mind intact.

Also? They said that the PASSIV was developed to train soldiers in an environment where death wasn't permanent, but also an environment where you're not sure if what you're experiencing at any given time is real or not. Who the fuck thought that was a good plan?

My main complaint with that movie was how blah the dreamscapes were. It's like...did anyone making it actually ever have a dream?

The visuals were great and there were men in beautifully tailored suits. I'm shallow like that. But yeah, agreed on the bit about it not being that complex. I never really understood why everyone thought it was such a complicated, mind-boggling film. I thought it was fairly straight-forward and the ending was a bit of a cop-out (though it didn't really diminish the overall value of the movie for me).

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Translation: You are dumb for liking something I don't like.

Cry moar, bebby.

So, OP...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Anytime someone's main complaint about something is "it makes stupid people feel smart," I always have to ask: do you think you're smart? Do you, OP, think you're smarter than these dumb people?

Because you're not. Millions of people enjoyed that movie, and some of those people are smarter than you. Guaranteed.

It's a really pointless complaint, is what I'm saying.

...I wasn't aware anyone thought it was an intellectual film. It's a stylish action film, and the entire premise is a setup for physics-defying stylish action.

Ia.

Fucking awful film, though Cillian and Marion worked the shit out of their roles.

I fucking adore that movie, but it's cool that you don't, there's a ton of popular media that I hate and wish people would stop talking about forever.

But seriously, it was a scifi action blockbuster, did you think The Matrix was supposed to be intellectual, too?

Oh god, agreed so hard. That damned film is unbelievably overrated. It's not particularly clever, it's even tedious at times and so much more could have been done with it!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with you. It was boring and pretentious and had little or nothing to do with what real lucid dreaming is like and raised too many questions without answering any of them. The only way I could tolerate it is the fact that I saw the Rifftrax version, which was HILARIOUS.
