Random run-of-the-mill episodes you totally love

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any episodes of shows you watch that, in contrast to fan favorites or Big Damn Episodes or controversial episodes, most of the viewership is like "it was okay" or "eh, filler" or "yeah it was good but nothing special", but which you absolutely adore the hell out of?

I'm like this with a certain episode of Star Trek: DS9 -- "In the Cards". It's mainly seen as a inoffensive comedic breather episode before the serious shit starts revving up before the season finale, but I LOVE IT. It makes me smile all over like a loon every time I rewatch it, and I just adore every minute and can't get enough flailing because it is perfection and so absurdly sweet in such a ridiculous yet believable way and makes me like even the slimy villainous characters involved. But everyone else is just like "oh yeah, that ep was fun."

I LOVE "In the Cards." I am still trying to find away to fit "soulless minions of orthodoxy" into a casual conversation.

I don't know what the fandom opinion is, but maybe the fact that my absolute favorite episode of Community is "Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design?" I don't know if I've seen many people list it as their favorite.

Ah, it's one of faves too! There were so many things about it that were wonderful. Professor Professorson, a course called "Learning!", a Turkish district IN the blanket fort.

This is making me want to watch Community episodes again, dammit.

DW "The Deadly Assassin" Yeah it was filler between Four losing a companion and gaining a new one, but, BUT! We got Gallifrey! Crispy!Master! THE MATRIX! I mean, what's not to love?

Blake's 7 "Gambit" IDEK why people hated this. Yes it is eminently MST3K-able. (I double dog dare you NOT to sing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" when they're wandering about "the space docks" with the balloons and the tinsel.) No it doesn't advance the plot significantly. But it's just...hilarious. And campy (in a good way) and still smart and has enough plot threads to be entertaining, and still connects with the overall plot.

X-Files "Paper Hearts" So it killed the mytharc. So the fandom hated it. I liked it. So shoot me.

Babylon 5 "Day of the Dead" Completely self-contained and almost separate from the overall plot, but it still fits...and provides a good breather (as well as a teaser) for the bits yet to come. "Walkabout" is also often viewed as filler, and not really commented on, but it's another favourite of mine..

From Xena, I adored "Blind Faith". Palaemon was a great character, and I loved the other guy, the one who was trying to teach Gabrielle to be a princess. Also I'm a sucker for stories depicting blindness.

From Buffy, I looooved the Thanksgiving episode, "Pangs". I don't usually see it ranking on other people's favorites lists, but it's a favorite of mine.

"I didn't mean to!"

"Undo it! Undo it!"
ginainthekingsroad: DS9 floats with rainbows (DS9- Deep Space Nyan)

"In the Cards" is cute. I also thought of "Civil Defense" right away, which I know has some other fans here on f!s. Another one I'd pick is "Things Past"- it's not really run-of-the-mill in the sense that it's not about the characters doing their jobs as normal. I'm a sucker for DS9's ambiguity, and this one is an showcase of character development for Odo as he literally revisits one of the harshest judgements he made during the Cardassian Occupation. It also has a lot of Garak, always a plus for me.
