Anxiety Attack Help

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
This week I had a huge anxiety attack where I felt like I was dying. I was taken to the hospital and given lorazepam and had my heart checked out as it was beating extremely fast. I have had anxiety attacks before, but nothing this bad.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks they use to get their anxiety under control? Or any good books or websites to read?

What helped for me was looking into mindfulness training and breathing exercises. There are a lot of (for free!) resources on the internet for mindfulness techniques. a lot of my anxiety pretty much stems from over thinking things to the point of idiocy. so a technique that helped me learn to restructure my thoughts and acknowledge my worries, but at the same time not overly focus on them was perfect for me. Haha, I know, starting out, listening to or reading it the first few times, it can sound a little... well like it should come with its own bowl of hippie-grade patchouli, but it has honestly improved my life in so many ways.

I also started taking Yoga, which obviously is not going to help you in that very moment of anxiety, but it kinda helps me just have a more stress-free week overall if there is at least one dedicated time to just having things be about me, grounding myself, becoming one with the pretzel shape.

I hope you can figure things out and find something that works for you.

I have been looking into mindfulness training, but I have not been able to join a class yet. I will look into some free mindfulness techniques. I have done only deep breathing to try and get my anxiety under control, but I know I have to work more on it.

I did pilates once and it didn't do anything for me, but maybe yoga would? I'll look into it.

Thank you for your advice!

I've never done pilates, so I cannot compare. Maybe it is just the super soothing voices that apparently all yoga teachers have. Life would be far more relaxing if we could all have our very own yoga teacher to narrate our lives.

But more seriously again, what works for me with yoga is that it is very focused on listening to your own body, your own boundaries and limitations and comes with a message that it doesn't matter if you cannot do XYZ like the person next to you, it's fine, we are all our own people. Which is always a good message to hear.

Anon, I was just looking at something about this today. I wasn't all that sure if it was something that would work. Thank you for your advice, even if it was meant for someone else. I'm going to give this a shot too.

SA

I hope it'll work out for you! Or if it doesn't, that you find something that does.

Thank you for the book rec!

I did breathing last time, but I guess I was doing it wrong? My mom tried to count my exhale/inhales, but I think I was to far gone as it was my first major attack. I'll work more on it.

Thank you for all your advice.

At the hospital, the psych nurse told me to start a journal for daily events. I will try to log my anxiety attacks now.

Today I tried holding my breath on each in and out and it worked on my mini-attack. Thank you.

I have a consultation in a week and they are going to evaluate me and the medication I am taking -- if I need to change them/dosage. My doctor knows my history with depression and anxiety. I will talk to her more when I see her next.

I've talked to you on f!s before and you've only been nice to me :) Thanks!
