Interesting point. My knowledge of the show is scant, but isn't Amber's snobbishness and setting sofia up to failthe problem.

Yeah, this is very outside my demographic too, but it's cute and likable, so I like watching it. You have a very good point about Amber--it would be better, at least, if they presented it as "what works for someone else may not necessarily work for you," but it doesn't do that.

(Also, I started watching because I hoped there would be Disney Princess interactions--but we've only ever seen Cinderella!)

I watch this sometimes and...that's something to consider. But Disney wouldn't be Disney if it didn't tool their princesses to be unfailingly kind and different.

This show is awful. Full stop. Reasons you listed and many others. My kid watches a few Disney shows and I hate even seeing the commercials for Sofia the First. And they're really pushing this show so ads are everywhere.

(I've only seen a few episodes. Seeing as how I'm 20 years outside their demographic it's odd that I've seen it at all, but my friend's 2 year old son likes it.)

I have a serious problem with the fact that royals are treated so much differently. Which, duh, but still. They seem to be the only ones doing magic (outside of magical families) and making gem stones is a spell for small children. Wtf? How does this economy work? This land is so stuffed full of royalty how do they support their kingdom? And I don't like how everyone special is a princess. Like, I know it's Disney and they love them some princesses but come on! Can't she get a "commoner" friend or something?

Again, I haven't watched the show. But I don't plan to, outside of babysitting, because part of my 'Murican identity is hating the philosophy that political power over others is an inheritable commodity.

Maybe I wouldn't be so bothered if the show stressed her duty to her people or something. This doesn't even bother me in actual Disney movies because the protagonists are usually going through some drastic change so I can imagine them needing to put off their duties until they deal with the sleeping spell/death by step-mother. Or the story is about how they become princesses. Which is different. I guess.

I'm pretty sure that's not just an American thing - tons of other countries revolted against aristocratic/monarchy governments. Some of them infamously so. Plus, you actually can make a case for the US having had it's own version of aristocracy for quite some time after the revolution considering it was white, land-owning [and therefore rich, and inherited 9 out of 10 times considering how marriages were kept to the same class most of the time] males.

I guess you could make the argument that sometimes people did marry into the class/make the money to get into it but...People married into aristocracy, or bought titles too.

-coughs- That nit-pick aside...

I've never actually seen the show, but the whole princess thing could depend since there were some monarchies where the title 'princess' was used for any female that was related to the King via descent with different ranks depending on how far back that ancestor was until it was finally distant enough that they lost the title. For example, someone whose great grandfather was the king would be a princess of a certain [probably lower] rank, where as someone whose father was/is king would be a princess of the highest rank - or close to it. Needless to say most of the monarchies I've seen set up like this are obsessed with rank. So...yeah. Kinda silly for a tv show, but it's not completely unrealistic either.

Sorry for the ramble ^^;;

I tried the first couple episodes, but was very put off by Cinderella saying that when her stepsisters tore her dress apart after several years of abuse, she should've tried harder to understand their POV. The rest was cute, but I just didn't get into it. Sounds like I'm not missing out on much.

...yeah, that is incredibly off-putting. I could maybe understand her regretting it if she had retaliated against them or forgotten them in utterly miserable circumstances and then later realized they were all screwed up by the stepmother; even then I would think Cinderella has a very generous heart. But you know Disney canon she doesn't retaliate and she's not leaving the stepsisters in bad circumstances--they lost out on the prince, big whoop, their chances were slim in the first place. (I suppose they're also out a servant, but you know, she wasn't supposed to be one...) There is absolutely nothing to regret about being upset when mistreated, or pursuing a chance to be happy when it finally appears. WTF, Disney.

"Amber's desire to be a 'traditional' princess is wrong in every episode."

Great, that is EXACTLY what shows for young girls need more of. More evidence that femininity is wrong and bad. /smashes head against wall

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree. Sofia is always right, but it's a so very black and white kind of right. There was an episode where they had a princess test to get to, and on the way there was a teacher who needed help carrying her books through the forest and to her house.

Now Amber and her group were like, "Sorry, got to take a test." Sofia ends up being conflicted about needing to take the test or helping--ultimately she helps because that's the "right" thing to do (and of course, that was the real princess test and she ends up with the best score).

Now, the whole time though, I'm sitting there like, "What the fuck message is this?!" Sure, helping people is awesome, but a teacher basically begging a child to blow off her responsibilities to help them with something menial? A child being asked to help an adult they barely know carry books into the woods to an isolated location? Um, what are you teaching my daughter Disney, because I would have flipped my shit had my kid done what Sofia did. Amber went and took her test like she should have, didn't wander off with a stranger, and yet Sofia was the golden child.

First of all, why are you expecting anything groundbreaking from Disney?

Second, there's nothing wrong with being feminine but there's also nothing wrong with giving little girls the message that you don't have to stick with traditional femininity since it's imposed on little girls at a young age.
