They were all right together, except for how he was a member of a secret military organization that was capturing and vivisecting sentient beings. Including people like Oz and whoever 'Adam' was before he was Adam.

So, you know...ick.

Very good point!

I know the whole Initiative storyline went awry, what with the supposed behind-the-scenes drama with the actress who played Maggie Walsh, so I'm not sure what the original endgame would have been. But there's still a lot of contrast between the monsters that just ARE - they're born that way, so to speak - all the vampires, and other creatures the Initiative cages - and those who MAKE themselves into monsters, the Initiative itself.

Exactly!

I did not know there was behind-the-scenes drama! Do tell. :)

Honestly, I think some of the problems with Riley's character come from the Initiative being, IMO, a really shaky piece of world-building. Outside of the vague THEMES! IT'S A THEME of intuitive/folkloric/feminine energy vs militant/pseudoscientific/masculine energy, it always seemed to me like so much of it made no damn sense, so embedding Riley's flaws/insecurities in it made him a pretty shaky character.

Yeah, the Initiative was really pretty ridiculous. It felt like a complete derailment to me, and is one of those things that, when i write fic about Spike or the Scoobies, I tend to either gloss or get rid of pretty quickly.
