Honestly, I think some of the problems with Riley's character come from the Initiative being, IMO, a really shaky piece of world-building. Outside of the vague THEMES! IT'S A THEME of intuitive/folkloric/feminine energy vs militant/pseudoscientific/masculine energy, it always seemed to me like so much of it made no damn sense, so embedding Riley's flaws/insecurities in it made him a pretty shaky character.

Yeah, the Initiative was really pretty ridiculous. It felt like a complete derailment to me, and is one of those things that, when i write fic about Spike or the Scoobies, I tend to either gloss or get rid of pretty quickly.
