The fundamental point you're missing is that you can't compare data to cars. If she took cars without paying for them, the US is out a car. That's not the same with data.

If she took a copy of Game of Thrones, the US still has that DVD. The US loses nothing, and the Philippines, where Game of Thrones was never sold, loses nothing.

I fail to see how you can't see that taking something without permission is not stealing. Even if it is a non-tangible item, it is someone's property. Someone who worked hard to create it, produce it, distribute it. If you don't reimburse that person/entity/corporation/artist/whatever you are stealing it. I really think there should be some way to access these types of things more easily but I will never argue that I'm not, at some level, stealing something from someone else.

They get reimbursed when they actually put the damn thing up for sale. You keep deliberately missing the point that the OP and many other people DO spend money on these things once the region issues are sorted out. It's more like borrowing a book from the library till you can get your own copy.

Illegal =/= morally reprehensible

Abortion is illegal in a lot of countries, doesn't mean it should be. Smoking pot is illegal in a lot of countries, doesn't mean it should be. Drinking alcohol was illegal at some point in U.S. history, and still is in some Muslim countries. And so on. There's also plenty of things that are legal, but not necessarily right.

Laws are only worth something if they are actually supported by their people, and once you have a critical mass that no longer supports certain legislation, change is needed. The fact that there's so much discussion about copying data, is because it's legislation that is not supported by a lot of people.

According to that logic, borrowing a legal copy from a friend would also be stealing even if I buy my own copy latter.

Ironically, that (borrowing a legal copy of any media) was in fact going to be illegal in my country (and luckily we shoot down that extreme copyright law) because people like you don't get that it's not that simple.

Your friend owns something. You borrow it. You can use it while your friend cannot. There is only one item between the two of you, and that item was paid for.

You download something, your friend downloads something, your neighbor, your mom, your grandmother, your priest... 6 people are now in possession of this thing without paying for it.

But while my friend or I weren't watching it, that borrowed DVD could be watched by my neighbor, my mom, my grandmother, my priest and my dog.
Maybe they would even record it on their own DVD recorder for their personal use in a future.

Because, you know, a legal copy isn't used all the time and many other people could use it too without paying.

The only real difference is that a digital copy can be seen by most people and without handing the physical copy.

NA B/c piracy is theft--I can't see why people can't admit their thieves when the download something, watch it (even if they delete it after), and keep it, which is what usually happens ime when someone downloads something.

There I said it. I'm a thief. I'm a pirate. I've downloaded stuff, kept it or deleted it, and never bought a copy. Primarily it was before anime was so common--I used to trade/buy VHS fansubs b/c it was the only way to see much anime that appealed to me. Why the hell can't you admit it?

Also, the library argument is useless. The library buys the item in question and it's usually/sometimes more expensive(for hardier binding, etc. also) than buying the item as a consumer to make up for those lost sales. If the item gets destroyed/ruined by a patron, they buy a new one of the item, thus spending more money on it. Items aren't donated to a library; the library buys them.
