As a tiny girl who has had martial arts training, thank you. Size has nothing to do with how much ass you're capable of kicking.

It... has a little bit to do with it. Within my first few weeks of wrestling I could easily pin a friend of mine who'd been at the sport for many years, purely by virtue of the fact that I was 150lbs (of mostly muscle) and she was 103. There's just no contest, sometimes, especially with grappling. That's why there are weight classes in the first place.

Definitely, but that's also in a sport with forms and rules, and nothing there except a mat. Natasha is out in the world with any number of things she can turn to her advantage, including people not being wary of her because she is small and female.

Oh true dat. It sounds cliche as fuck but in IRL fights one of the best advantages a woman can have is that dudes really do assume she can't do anything but scream or slap or flail, and they really do pull their punches, even subconsciously. They really do seem to think "har har I'll just hold her arms or something, that'll make her submit!" because it works in the movies?... and then get their kneecaps kicked out or kneed in the gut or junk.

Of course dudes who really want to harm women tend not to fall for that shit, unfortunately. Only the misguidedly ~~chivalrous~~ patronizing.

If you're basing it on raw physical strength, yes. But fighting isn't solely dependent on strength, which is one of the main things martial arts teaches you because it emphasizes technique over strength. I weigh about 115 lbs and I'm easily capable of escaping from the grip of a guy who weighs close to 200. It's all a matter of knowing pressure points and how to bend joints so that they hurt. Strength has nothing to do with that.

Oh hell I took aikido myself and use those tactics on larger and stronger opponents, but Natasha doesn't just have to "escape", ostensibly - she has to win. And that's a whole different story. Breaking someone's hold is fine, but could you actually punch/choke that guy out if he knew how to fight, too? Probably not, unless you were considerably more skilled than he was.

Of course there's more to it than that, there's speed and technique and resourcefulness, but "strength has nothing to do with it" or "strength doesn't matter" is just false. Strength is one of many factors that definitely matters.

Though, honestly, in IRL fights - not just pretendy martial arts funtimes of which I've had a great deal of experience as well with set rules and regulations - I find that the person who wants the most to win usually does, unless the combatants are grossly mismatched. Which means the fight doesn't go to the strong, the swift, or even the talented - it goes to the psycho who's willing to truly, permanently damage another human being as much as possible as fast as they can. Loooootttaaa people I know in the military say the same thing about lethal combat, as well. The one willing to kill the fastest, wins. So being a ruthless killer would probably carry Natasha through the day more than her skill or speed or talents, honestly.

Can hardly compare to the experience of your military (special forces? I thought we mostly gave our troops guns these days - doesn't seem often they'd have to attach the bayonets) friends, but having been a volunteer for an unarmed police force, in my experience I would say it would be very,very difficult to overestimate just how important strength and size are.

Unless the other elements are completely disproportionate, the bigger guy is walking away 90% of the time.

They mean fights with guns, obviously, dude. The winner is usually the one who's willing to shoot to kill first; the one who hesitates or considers the situation dies.

Oh I know, those people who think a couple of years of martial arts are going to help them beat the shit out of someone half again their size are dreaming, even in the above gif in a grappling sport that woman is now completely fucked - they'll only win if that bigger person gives up when they're put in a hold and doesn't just punch them in the throat with the other hand. Pain's pain, you can fight through it. Somebody grabbing or even breaking your finger won't stop someone who's determined to fight.

But if that strength size is even remotely comparable? I've always seen determination/will to hurt carry the day. The person who's willing to go for permanent eye damage, the person who's willing to use a weapon (improvised or otherwise) first. Just before I left there was another fighting death outside a club at my university, and the smaller dude won: bigger guy punched him and knocked into a table, smashing glasses and bottles, smaller guy whipped around and opened bigger guy's throat with a piece of glass.

EDIT: Which of course is double-edged, hahah. If someone's bigger and wants to hurt you more than you want to hurt them, you're doubly fucked.

And yeah instant arming is a thing, but the vast majority of it is always going to be 'I'm going to punch and kick the shit out of you', and generally people have the will for that the minute the red mist comes down. Hell it's a big training issue - getting officers to control that instinct, and not use gratuitous force.

You don't necessary have many opportunities to go for* the permanent damage until they're down anyway unless we're in a situation where someone has intentionally brought along a weapon, and in most cases it's all over by then.

*probably preaching to the choir, but I feel I should point out that any fight can lead to serious injury or death

This is gradually turning into 'I'm going to threaten to punch and kick the shit out of you, walk away, and then my friends are going knife you in an alley the second you walk outside' where I live(d), unfortunately. Scary shit and I don't know how the police are going to put get a handle on it. Japan never ceases to amaze me with its virtually violence-free drinking culture, to be honest. A few of my coworkers wouldn't believe me when I told them that fights regularly break out in clubs and bars, and insisted that "no, that only happens in the movies".

Definitely not going to disagree about the huge size difference thing, though. I was shocked by how easy it was to overpower said very experienced wrestler friend with even a modicum of training. I'd bought into the whole tiny, skilled martial artist wins the day notion myself... but she couldn't even get me into holds; I just pried her arms apart. Thinking, hey, I'm 150 and she's 100 lbs, and there's basically nothing she can do to win this fight, oh boy am I ever not going to pick fights with someone who outweighs me by this much, ever.

Have to run, or I'd expand on this, but yeah, definitely some scary shit. And the most shocking thing to me was how young everyone involved can be. Dealt with a lot of estate gang violence and it was pretty much exclusively under eighteens.

For your second point, during officer safety training they proved that point pretty effectively. We had a woman in our class who was London champion in some martial arts or other in her weight category - but just over five foot/120lbs. They paired her up with me (over two meters/220lbs) to demonstrate the importance of size and it was comically easy to get out of half the moves, or to literally get up and walk away. Let alone her being able to get into reach to try to grab me if I was using strikes.

Except that helped drive home 'wait shit, there's plenty of people that much heavier than me, except they're not going to have the psychological block... we.. we get guns right??'.

... I think I have a new goal in life.
