Well no, but her main feature in the comics seems to be her boobs as well. So maybe we should not go by comics and go more for realism (like the MCU seems to be doing).

I know ScarJo worked out like crazy for that role. I think she might just be an endomorph and I wouldn't want Natasha recast just because Scarlett isn't cut enough.

Um...not sure if troll, but...You don't have to be built of bulging muscles to be able to do the stuff Widow did in the movies. You can be tough and strong and still sleek. Different kinds of body types, different muscles, etc.

And I'm pretty sure ScarJo did a lot of the stunts herself? Obviously not the super superhero stuff but yeah, she's pretty tough.

Calling troll.

If you're sincere, keep in mind that more than half of her job is being a spy. Overly muscular women, unfortunately, stick out quite a bit, which is the opposite of what being a good spy is. Particularly when it seems like she's put into roles where it's not expected that she'd have an outward appearance of strength.

She's fit, and she probably has the benefit of the Soviet version of the super soldier serum to increase her fitness past what her appearance would be. (I don't think we know that for sure MCU; I usually just go with it when I'm writing her)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
She seems realistic enough to me. As someone who hasn't read the comics, I assumed her usual role was as a spy/assassin type. Less emphasis on super strength but definitely the speed, technique and smarts to keep up.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
it makes me sad to see so many people in this thread defending the obvious misogyny among superhero writers. let's be real, women superheroes are there solely to look pretty and provide sexual appeal. :\

Her muscles are under a cloak of soft curvy hotness so you will be caught completely off-guard when she murders you.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Either that, or they could have at least given her more powerful guns. The pivotal scene against Loki's army where everyone else is pulling out all the stops and Widow is there with her two tiny little handguns, somehow managing to do as much damage as the others was extremely unrealistic.

That's cute. If we were talking about Jen Walters, even Carol Danvers, yeah. I'd give it to you.

Natasha's main role has never been to just beat the living bejesus out of the bad guys. She's a tactician, a spy, an assassin. She needs to blend in to do her job and she's smart enough to get it done without breaking down walls. Being built like a tank makes you stand out.

Also, she looks to be in fantastic shape. Muscle doesn't build the same way on everyone, but I'm betting she could still kick your ass.

Her role isn't to match the guys (big battle at the end notwithstanding.) She's supposed to be a spy/assassin, not a soldier...and she looks like a spy/assassin.

I was going to agree with you, but then I really thought about it. First, she does undercover work - she might get noticed because of her looks, but she probably wouldn't want any mark to know that she could kick their ass until she actually has to. Second, you can be fit and strong without looking that muscular or tough - take female gymnasts, all kinds of different body types (compare Svetlana Khorkina or Nastia Liukin to Jordyn Wieber), some much more muscular-looking than others, but all very strong.

*looks down at own arm muscles* Uh-oh

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-21 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
My arms are noodles, let's get that straight right from the get-go. Uncooked noodles, practically.

I used to be able to lift over 150 lbs without breaking a sweat. I stopped working out for a couple years, and now that I'm getting back into it, I'm lucky if I can lift 50lbs without collapsing.

But here's the thing: in the intervening years, my arms didn't really change shape or size. Oh, sure, the muscle mass softened and there was even some fat at times, but the only way you could actually tell was by squeezing my arms. Otherwise, my arm before and after looks pretty much the same.

Also, Natasha's first and foremost job is to be a spy, not a soldier or a combat operative. Looking weak without actually being weak would be pretty important.

So while I can understand the frustration with the body types, ScarJo was actually a pretty good selection, balancing both the combat and the seduction aspects of her character.

That wouldn't have fit who her character is. I thought they did a great job casting her.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Man, am I the only one really confused by everyone's assumption that ScarJo + any amount more muscle = ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER? Like, a little bit of definition is this totally over-the-top thing to ask for a character who's jumping around doing flips everywhere?

Even if she is on a super serum, uh, we saw that it does totally add muscle, unless she was given the special waif version or something. Regardless, I promise that having the audacity of an athletic body type as a WOMAN!!! is not actually going to make you stick out enough that it would be hard to cover (oh, I'm taking swing dancing, haha, silly hobby), so I'm not really buying the "ZOMG SHE'S A SPY FIRST, SO SHE CAN'T HAVE MUSCLES" thing, either. Like that character would want to sacrifice her ability to defend herself in favor of a cover, anyway.

While I don't think getting a more athletic-looking actress would have been a bad idea either, it suits the character to look like a femme fatale in this case - i.e. someone who can easily be underestimated.

I just wish ScarJo actually did some training or something so she didn't have to have a double in every action scene. Oh, the horrible wigs and the face shoop! Why is our cgi not better. So much suspension of disbelief breaking uncanny valley to be had. Why is it when actors get hired for an action role their first response is to GET JACKED and when actresses land one they're like DIET AND MAKEOVER AND PUSHUP BRA?

No, don't answer that, I already know and am depressed. I'll go watch Haywire again and cry softly into my moonfoods.

I'd agree with you if we were talking She-Hulk or maybe Carol Danvers, but Black Widow's not exactly the tank of the group. Even if she was muscular, she'd probably be more lean in keeping with her theme of stealth and agility.

There's also the fact that her lack of physical strength compared to the rest of the Avengers was explored in a pretty interesting way, particularly in the scene where she's trying to escape the Hulk. It's pretty clear that she's scared shitless, but she uses her brain to get herself out of there until backup arrives. Plus she's still useful, capable of taking care of herself, and doesn't constantly need to be rescued so that the male characters can prove how manly they are and get rewarded with smooches. That puts her above 95% of female characters in comic/action films, IMO.

I would like to see more superheroines who don't have an idealized, tiny build that makes no sense with their powerset, but I don't think Black Widow is the best character to criticize for not being swole enough. I guess we'll just have to wait until they make a Glory movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You do realize that most acrobats are small, and lithe right? People don't necessarily have to be muscular to be effective fighters, either. Some people are more muscular than others, but generally you have to be consuming a ton of lean protein to get super cut to begin with.
