it makes me sad to see so many people in this thread defending the obvious misogyny among superhero writers. let's be real, women superheroes are there solely to look pretty and provide sexual appeal. :\

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
basically, this. (although i wouldn't say they're there SOLELY to provide sexual appeal - sometimes they can get killed off to provide angsty backstory for the male superhero!)

sarcasm aside, i thought this was really damn obvious? apparently not.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Because saying that a woman can't be a superhero based on how she looks isn't also misogynistic? It's one thing to point out unfortunate trends in female superheros (waif-fu needs to go), but it's entirely another to say that women (or people in general) can't be strong without having bulky muscles.

Scarjo isn't some tiny stick figure in the movies, she's obviously fit - she's just not She-Hulk.

And this pretty much fits with the character, the character's background and the character's preferred fighting method - aka using an opponents strength against them.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Additionally, just because you want more buff superhero women, doesn't mean it's okay to shit on the not buff ones.

Wanting more She-Hulk doesn't mean you have to treat Black Widow like crap.

What was it Gina Torres said (Paraphrasing cause I can't find the link) "Skinny Bitches shouldn't be allowed to play superheros."

This is why GT is my goddess.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I love Gina, that's a pretty douchebag comment. The whole ~waif-fi~ trope can be super sexist, but to say that just because you are small/skinny (http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/809235.html?thread=655525395#cmt655525395) means you can't kick ass is seriously discouraging. The problem with the trope is there isn't enough Jen Walters and Carol Danvers to balance out the Natasha Romanoffs, not that the Natashas exist in the first place.

Seriously.

I'm a little said at Gina Torres now. I heart her so much and wish she were playing Storm, but that's just ignorant and kinda hurtful.

I get called skinny pretty often. I also got called "Headhunter" back in my karate days because I had a pretty vicious backfist. The best--absolute best, hands down--person in our class was this tiny 4'11" waif of a woman, delicate-looking and everything, maybe a hundred pounds soaking wet...and ever ounce of her was fury. I'd take fighting one of the boys over fighting her. She was terrifying and she was strong.

Size may be an indicator, but it isn't the ONLY indicator of strength or skill. Oy.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I too know a tiny waif like lady who is the best in her martial arts class. Ability to kick butt isn't about size man.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah this comment made me realize I really wanted her to play a superhero, but it's a terrible thing to say. It's like those stupid real women have curves arguments that ignore the fact that women have all different body types.

That's terrible and it's made me lose a lot of respect for her if it's true. Fuck that.

I feel like this is doing as much for keeping female superheroes back as anything else.

I mean, in the past few years we've had Power Girl's AMAZING speech to a bunch of kids:

http://www.dadsbigplan.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/power-girl-26-girl-power.jpg

Bucky basically admitting that the only thing holding him together after the Winter Soldier thing IS Natasha:

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m9jg9gLtNh1qzc760o1_500.png (Yes, that story arc was fanservice-y in drawing style. It was also incredibly powerful, imo)

Kate Bishop trying to juggle being a superhero, being a team leader of a completely fragmented team and being a teenage girl. And talking smack with Clint besides, despite being a little bit in love with him (and I will tear into anyone who says that her being a little in love with him is somehow misogynistic. He's her role model, she saved him from himself, he then saved her from herself. That's bound to make a teenage girl think things): http://oi45.tinypic.com/29uuddx.jpg

I'm sure I could think of more. Those are just the ones off the top of my head.

Kate Bishop <3

tbh I am not down with Clint/Kate as an actual ship, but I find her being a bit in love with him kinda sweet? IDK, I really like their relationship a lot. Then again, Clint and Kate are my two fave superheroes of all time.

If it makes you feel better, Fraction has said that they will never, ever screw.

I don't like the ship either. But I think she does have a kind of harmless, eh...sempai-type crush?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw something where someone said Pizza Dog will never die and they'll never get together and realized that this was pretty much the series of my dreams. :D

But yeah, ia, ia. Harmless is definitely how I'd describe it, and it's weird to think people think it's misogynistic.

You don't read comics, do you?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
There's a shit ton of misogyny that happens in superhero stuff.

No one is arguing that female superheros aren't frequently played up for their looks, but that doesn't fucking mean that any and all female superheros have to super buff. Wanting more buff female superheros doesn't have to mean shitting on the less buff ones.

The idea that Scarlet can't play the Black Widow because she isn't buff enough is dumb. Especially when the character's original job wouldn't have called for big muscles. And it's fucking insulting to act like people can't be strong without visibly looking buff - people develop muscles differently.

Black Widow was fucking awesome in this movie because she *wasn't* stronger than her opponents, but beat them anyway by using their strengths against them. She either uses their own techniques against them *while they think that they're using them on her* or she fucking steals their weapons and kills them with it.

Talk about fighting smarter!

Yeah, I want more buff women - but that means I want to see She-Hulk, not that I think they need to bulk up Black Widow.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Everything about this comic is beautiful, bless.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
And by comic I clearly mean comment.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
THIS! Having every single woman be the exact same body type regardless of whether that type is super buff or super skinny is harmful, unrealistic, and BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING. Give me variety! I don't want everyone looking like they were traced from the portfolio of a single supermodel with only their pigmentation and hairstyle to distinguish them.
