In my country it's the same and for some reason that's it's considered ok, while downloading something isn't, even though piracy is an illegal business and at downloading something I'm not giving my money to someone selling it illegally.

I already gave up on trying to understand the logic behind that.

And since they're cheaper, they also block any attempt of creating an actual market for legal sales (plus they don't pay tax, so the country doesn't earn anything either).

So what damages more the economy in the end?

You won't get any argument about that from me. Just pointing out why a country might get picky about downloads (can get tracked by foreign bodies etc) and not give a crap about cheap disks (keeps internal cashflow going).

So what you're saying is that the time they spend bootlegging DVDs is time they're not spending selling people into sex slavery, so we should buy more bootleg DVDs.

It's been that way for years with us, so I guess we're used to it? You could torrent things openly and your internet will never get cut because everyone torrents back home and everyone knows it. Piracy laws are lax though they did try to pass some "anti-cybercrime" law last year. That was just a front for being able to prosecute you for badmouthing some choice politicians. One senator got his feelings hurt and decided that should be illegal. Sigh.

This is one of the main questions I have. When I stream an (otherwise unavailable) episode of a show from an illegal site, I am paying someone, in some form. I'm looking at the ads hosted by the streaming site. I'm accepting the risk that these black-market sites will infect my computer with something. I'm taking the time to hunt down the episode I want in the first place - not an easy task, considering the general whack-a-mole game that goes on with these sorts of things.

In short, it feels like I've paid my due in time and attention, which is a way of paying for entertainment that's familiar - TV, radio, and legitimate online streaming sites are all ad-supported.

Leaving aside the questions of right and wrong, which have been amply debated elsewhere in this thread, it's a pity content providers don't get the message and offer viewers the opportunity to pay them in this coin, instead of having the profit for ad-views go to shady video-hosting and url-shortening sites.
