Has anybody here figured out a way to NOT put things off until the last minute? Whenever I try to get an early start on something, I look at the time and think, "Eh, I have plenty of time, I don't need to start it just yet..." and then screw around until it's the last minute and I have to scramble. Hell, I shouldn't even be here right now; I've got shit I should be doing instead.

So has anyone here figured out the cheat-code for their brain that shuts off the "I've got plenty of time" impulse?

Set an alarm. "I have to do X when the alarm goes off". It gives you a tangible way to think "time to do X".

The only way I can avoid letting things pile up until the last minute is to schedule everything and write it all down in a day planner. At 11am I will do this for one hour. At 3 pm, I will go here and talk to this person. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, I will study from 6pm-8pm.

It only works about 50% of the time, because I tend to put off the actual scheduling. I suck.

I tend to give myself arbitrary rewards for things. Going "OK if I do this, then I'm allowed to play this much of a video game." And then I'm REALLY strict about not letting myself at my reward until I've gotten that much done.

(though I procrastinate so I'm not the best at it. But I got my shit done for college, so yay?)

That's my tactic too. It works a good portion of the time.

When I need to get something done tonight, I hide my clocks. All of them. Then I go into a panic because I don't know how much time I have to do anything, and I get that shit done immediately. :D

When I need to get an early start on something (more than a day before it's due) I just schedule it.

That's actually a really good idea

I, too, have this problem. I feel you.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I scheduled a time of day (same time every day) when I would go somewhere I can get work done without distractions and do some work. It didn't matter what work, I just had to do something. And some days, nothing would be urgent, so I would just work on things that were due later on. Just having that as a part of my daily routine helped a lot. It was really the only way I could get myself to work consistently on projects that were due weeks or months down the line.

sa

It also helped that the time I set to work was right after a part of my routine that had to be at a certain time of day (like, I could only get breakfast at a pretty specific time of day, and right afterwards I would go to my office to work, and stay there until either lunch or class). So maybe try to work it into your normal routine like that...

I usually set a rule where I do it as soon as I remember I should be doing it. If I go on putting it off, I concentrate on the bad stuff that'll happen if I don't do it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
No idea, but I do that ALL THE TIME and it gets me into so much trouble. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Do the first, smallest thing, that you can possibly do RIGHT AWAY. Don't plan out the whole thing elaborately in your head, or you'll never get started --- though it helps to have a general idea of the whole thing --- just pick the first, smallest bit of whatever it is you need to get done, then DO IT. Don't obsess over time (either too early or too late), just do it. Don't set deadlines, because if you have to set a deadline, the task is too big. Whatever is the absolute minimal effort you can do, to get a start on the project, do it.

After you're done, re-assess where you are, and pick the NEXT smallest thing you can do, and do that.

Then do it again.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

Eventually you'll get there, OP. Good luck!

That's definitely a good strategy for a lot of things.

My partner got me to actually do things I needed to do by pointing out that it's never too early to finish something that needs to be done, and once it's done, it's one less thing I have to stress over! Plus, if I get everything finished early, I can screw around as much as I like without feeling guilty.

Granted, it only worked maybe 70% of the time because my stupid ass forgot to tell him what was due when, but it was a good structure for not leaving practically EVERYTHING to the last minute.
