(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 01:21 am (UTC)(link)This. Especially in Holmes, since it tends to make the cases about the criminals, where in the originals it was mostly about the victims or the witnesses or the relatives, the people Holmes was helping figure out what had gone wrong with their world. When it's all about Moriarty, you lose people like Violet Hunter or John MacFarlane or Mrs St. Clair or ever poor gullible Jabez Wilson.
Mind you, I also tend to get a bit tired of it generally. I like Monster/Case of the Week. I loved the A-team, the best episodes of SPN were back when they were two brothers hunting things, etc. The problem with having a Big Bad is that as the plot increasingly focuses on them, the story seems to take a crazy train straight into angstland. Which is fine, and sometimes awesome and gutwrenching, but other times just seems to escalate into crazy times just because we can't slip behind last season.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)I totally agree with all of this. Thank you for putting it so well. Both about Sherlock Holmes in particular and about television in general. serialized television can be great and wonderful and entertaining. Not everything has to have an overarching plot, and in some cases it's actively detrimental. Like with Sherlock Holmes.

Holy fuck, I'd never thought of that. But you're right, ACD's stories were very much about the victims, and how they handled the situation and how Holmes and Watson helped them.
