But... the anime is hardly gory? Most of the gory scenes are either offscreen or only seen in the shadows they cast.
I mean sure, the concept of people getting eaten is quite gruesome, but it's never explicitly shown - not on the level Baccano! (for example) does gory scenes at least.

The OP's opinion seems to be that people can't handle it because of the gore- but the reality is that most people can't handle it because of the gruesome you mentioned. The average anyone is pretty desensitized to blood and guts-- it's the content that's scaring people off. People being eaten by other giant people is really disturbing. Baccano! is gory and bloody, but it's hardly horror.

Unless you have a vore fetish. *cough*

But I think that's logical - the concept being scarier than the actual gore. It's the same sort of horror as in zombie movies - the way the (normal) titans are mindless (human-)eating machines that just don't die unless you hit the right spot - that's a very classic thing.
To me, the violence in Baccano! is more cringeworthy than the grotesquery in SnK. Maybe because in one version, it's monsters and in the other humans (even though some of them are immortal) - I always found the thought of human beings slaughtering and torturing much more unsetteling than when monsters do it. But the uncannyness of monsters vs. the potential reality of serial killers is a matter of taste/opinion.

Yeah, my roommates and I were just discussing this. My best friend, for example, is TERRIFIED of ghosts. Just thinking about ghosts sets him on edge- but he doesn't bat an eyelash at my fear-triggers, which are disease and contamination based. Zombies don't bother me because they eat people, they bother me because they infect people. My girlfriend is bothered by depravity. The Hills Have Eyes style gross disregard for human life- people taking glee in rape and murder and dismemberment. While that doesn't bother me in the slightest! Or at least, it doesn't give me nightmares.

I think it's insane to claim that everyone who can't watch SnK is exaggerating- different strokes. Vastly different strokes for vastly different folks. If there's a sound in my house, I'm going to go investigate. But if that sound might be.. a spider? Forget about it.

And in the case of Baccano!- I didn't even recall the gore and bloody until you brought it up. Because it didn't really resonate with me. So definitely a different focus depending on your taste.
