Definitely get the feeling that they're censoring large chunks for the blu-rays.

Really? I think the level of gore is similar to Fullmetal. Not that bad, imo.

SnK isn't gore, it's moe.

Well, you just gave me yet another reason to be interested in this show.

I like excessive violence and gore! :D

[identity profile] thyried.livejournal.com 2013-05-23 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Just a note, some of the more excessive gore is censored for the broadcast, though they might be uncensored for the Blu-Ray/DVD releases. The manga is much less censored.

I saw some clips of it and I'm like... so basically they're being terrorized by giant naked Japanese men.

Okay.

I just don't really get the appeal of the show period. It's not scary to me (in fact I love the monster designs). It's just... boring.

to be fair the idea of humans being eaten (alive most of the time) just might be too much for some people. that was the case for me for awhile, even though the eating parts are relatively tame (i guess, not like i have a lot of other examples to compare it to) it's more the feeling it invokes i guess?

I never heard of this, so I googled it. The images that pop up on Google Image search aren't necessarily gory or scary, but definitely creepy, especially the really creepy smile that pops up. I can see myself going "Yeah no, not gonna watch this" mostly for that.

That is gorgeous looking artwork. I do like scary things but not so much gory things.

I didn't think it was that gory, either. Even the manga's not as terrible as it could be, especially if you compare to something like Berserk or Gantz that have organs flying about and everything. I can see why some people would want to avoid it though, everyone's tolerance for that kind of thing is different.

I don't think it's that bad in terms of gore, but the abject horror of those first few episodes (when the city's fragile grasp on safety is completely obliterated) might be too much for some. I personally love it for that since I really enjoy angst and drama in storytelling, but yeah, it's a story about human beings desperately trying (and usually failing) to not get eaten to death by giant, senseless, unstoppable creeper-face Cosmic Horrors. I could see why someone would say it was "too scary."

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe some people are- but my girlfriend couldn't get past the second episode. She honestly wishes she could watch it, but the specific nature of the horror going down just.. gets to her. She was utterly disturbed.

It could be that they're censoring, or it could be you're more numb to it, but it could also be the fact that people can have vastly different levels of tolerance for things coming into play as well.

it is too ridiculous to be scary. i laughed all the way at the feeble attempts to bring "more scary gore" to the viewer. somewhere along the line they just went overboard with it so now it doesn`t do anything really.

Eh, the gore doesn't bother me, but she sheer overwhelming BLEAKNESS of the tone turns me off. I don't mind series with somber themes and harsh reality, but I have my limits. (Same reason why I never got into The Walking Dead comic.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
But... the anime is hardly gory? Most of the gory scenes are either offscreen or only seen in the shadows they cast.
I mean sure, the concept of people getting eaten is quite gruesome, but it's never explicitly shown - not on the level Baccano! (for example) does gory scenes at least.

taotrooper: A girl magician is feeling a bit shocked (Trucy / OMG)

[personal profile] taotrooper 2013-05-24 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
People get scared at different stuff. Even not counting the gore, the series (both media) handles a theme of psychological horror as well. And some people react to that, and some don't. I mean, there's the fact it deals with a primal fear: getting eaten by a predator. This is some animalistic, caveman-era shit going on. Just like some people are scared of the dark (another primal fear) and some aren't, some will react to this theme worst than others.

I can tolerate most gore, and I was almost okay with what I saw, but I had to drop the manga after 12 issues or so because somehow it all made me uncomfortable. I'm not even sure what exactly broke my tolerance point. Was it the angst and fatalism? The gore? The primary fear? The fact that the uncanny valley of the titans' design really freaked me out? I want to give the anime a chance for the memes and see if I can figure it out with a more simplified version.

It's not so much volume of gore for me. There's just something really unsettling to me about the Titans, which is deliberate, and no one's been able to tell me why I should watch it anyway.

But the snotty attitude of fans, all "watch it anyway it's so good you're being a baby!!" is super delightful. Yes, I'm definitely going to watch a show I didn't find interesting that made me uncomfortable because it looks pretty.

I just watched the first episode earlier and despite being pretty desensitised to gore the ending very much freaked me out after finding the first part kind of dopey. The complete helplessness in the face of death (particuarly such a horrible death) disturbed me on a level media rarely has. Which is odd since I'm a big fan of zombie stuff.

I'm in two minds whether to keep watching myself.
