[Jesus Christ Superstar]

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-05-24 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe he wouldn't react as badly as you think he would...? I mean, and perhaps I'm completely wrong here, but a "conservative Catholic" wouldn't normally like that movie.
bur: Mami looking kind of surprised at something off to the side. (Surprised Mami)

That's just what I was thinking. My parents liking Jesus Christ Superstar was one of the first hints I had that they weren't nearly as "old-fashioned" as they acted.

Thirded. I mean, if you love Jesus Christ Superstar for religious reasons, you're probably not all that conservative. Aside from playing fast and loose with the representations of the apostles, it's a very ... political take? Not necessarily a critical one, but it does point out things about how Jesus would have looked to people at the time and how he looks to some people now.

Fourthing this. (I came here to say this, actually.) My family was conservative Christian, not Catholic, and we heard pretty much cooooooooonstantly from the pulpit how "of the devil" musicals like this and Godspell were. (We really really really really hated hippies LOL.)

how do you even manage to make an MSPaint graphic out of focus

Take a screencap and increase the size. Or grab a blurry image off image search. Easy peasy pie.

but the text even

Dear god I just noticed it's also a png oh wow—

Resizing it over an over, and saving it as a .gif, and then a .jpeg, and then back and forth???

Aw man, once you head out of MSPaint and into an actual image editor, it's like actual effort to make something look bad.

Look on the bright side: You'd probably feel even more awkward if the reason you liked it was for the slash fic.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of sad that you have to hide that. I get it, some people don't react well and it could cause undue stress or drama in the relationship but still. Just seems like even if you have different views this could still be one place where you come together.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I like Jesus Christ Superstar for the Jesus/Judas slash.

There is no way it's not at least semi-canon in that show. umf.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it is. Judas sings a reprise of "I Don't Know How to Love Him", for God's sake.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, and that's so... gay. I mean, I don't know how else it COULD be interpreted. You could say it's this amazing dude!love he-is-my-saviour sort of thing, but that's really not it, is it? He reprises the female love interest, with 100x more emotion than she ever sang it with.

Plus the fiery stares during the betrayal scene omg get my hand out of my panties. "judas, you betray me with a kiss?"

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
That is totally canon. Judas is such a whiny little bitch I love it. Best Bible interpretation to date.

He likes it for religious reasons? LOL

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
It is a unique and interesting examination of the complex relationship of Jesus and Judas and Mary! Of the personal struggles Jesus dealt with and a story of the man not the myth.

I like the songs too. (Herod's still makes me laugh.)

I like the songs too. And the "man vs. myth" theme. Nonetheless, as a Jew, I think it's too bad--given the musical is hardly a traditional Christian work--those involved with it not only retained the anti-Jewish elements of the Passion narrative but in some cases even dialed them up to eleven (e.g., the Sadducee leaders all singing in evil gravelly voices). I'm sure Rice, Lloyd Webber, and the Broadway and Hollywood directors have nothing against Jews (unlike Mel Gibson) and didn't mean to promote the old "Jews are eternally responsible for killing Christ" charge, but "intent isn't magic," as they say.

*facepalm*

I never twigged to all of that -- I only have vague memories of trying out for Mary M at my Catholic HS years ago. Thank you for the adjusted perspective (and I'm totally appalled at myself for not seeing it to begin with!)

I've never seen it. I feel like I'd be offended somehow. (Am religious.)

However, I love this silly musical called Rigoletto, not even for the religious aspect/metaphors so much as the cute story. The male lead can really sing.

/not super invested in musicals but damn a good song is a good song and good singing is :DDDD
bur: The Unicorn facing off with the Red Bull (The Last Unicorn)

[personal profile] bur 2013-05-25 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I personally don't think there's too much to be offended by. It takes a very intimate look at the Passion and tells a story of human struggle and weakness instead of one showing the birth of a religion. The narrative itself never decides on wether Jesus is the son of God or a delusional cult leader as the curtain falls right after Jesus's crucifixion.

Mostly, to simplify it greatly, it tells the story of a man who's found himself overwhelmed by his fame and way in over his head and his best friend who finds his every attempt to save him coming back to bite him.

The homoeroticism of performances also vary. The one I saw live came across as very brotherly.

But, most importantly, the music is FREAKIN' AMAZING. Have Colm Wilkinson singing "Gethsemane": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4omWMMibRuE

:DDD Oh man, so many cute songs on there. I'm a little embarrassed to admit I like it, but damn. I can't help it!
