THIS. Jesus fucking Christ. Didn't ACD go out of his way on the very first page of A Scandal in Bohemia to stress the fact that Irene did not win Holmes' respect through making him ~fall in love~, but instead won his respect solely by her intellect, which (especially at the time it was written) was an intentional subversion of typical female character roles?

Yep, The fourth sentence in the story is:

"It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler."

That's not ambiguous. AT ALL.

And if you wanna argue against it on the grounds of "Watson wrote that, he could be wrong", well, 99% of the stories are written from Watson's POV; if you're going to dismiss this, you have to dismiss most of canon.

And for her part, Irene spends part of the story getting married to another guy whom she says she loves and she doesn't even really know Holmes anyway and probably just sees him as That Annoying Guy Trying to Sneak into My House.

Yeah, exactly! Either way, it's non-canonical. And yeah, not all versions follow canon, but for every version to not follow canon in this specific way... d-:

LOL! I'd love it if someone wrote a fic about Irene where she referred to him that way and *didn't* fall for him or try to seduce him.

Don't tell Tumblr that tho. Also don't tell them Watson's expressions of friendship are NOT "totally TEH SECKS" as they will disagree with that completely.....

It's interesting you bring that up because in most cases that I've seen, Irene DOES win Sherlock's respect because of her intellect, the falling in love is left sort of up in the air and more of a "maybe? if Sherlock wasn't all about MYSTERIES AND PUZZLES".

I always got the impression that while Holmes did not fall for her if he ever were to "fall in love" with someone it would be with someone very like Irene. Someone who was intelligent, worldly and as interested in a good old fashion adventure as he was.
