Definitely this, esp me being a queer woman myself, there are a lot of problematic elements of yaoi as a genre, consent issues and having "seme/uke" roles, reinforcing that there needs to be a "woman" in the relationship.

But just a reminder op, penis =/= male! I like yuri more as well, but its really harmful to say it's because of the lack of penises.

Yeah, this. I love shipping, and that definitely includes m/m ships. I dislike the genre of yaoi for the seme/uke dynamic and that godawful, "I can't hold back my passion~!" "Iyahhh, sempai-sama!" rape-is-love bullshit.

You do realize there's a fuckton of BL that subverts or does away entirely with the seme/uke dynamic, yes?

There are a lot of problematic elements in any genre, and BL is not immune to those elements, but it takes all of like 3 seconds to find perfectly fine, not-problematic stories.

Better yet is when people recommend perfectly fine, not-problematic stories, which people can then discover, like, and recommend to others.

Shit gets a lot of publicity.

I have to agree with the other poster that a lot of people's "yaoi" stereotypes are like ten or fifteen years out of date. Today's BL is not the same as the BL years ago, and while there are still consent issues that really arise in most Japanese media because of the (yes means no) culture they're a part of, it's not nearly the Giant Muscular Seme and Delicate Uke generation anymore. (On that note, no one calls them "seme" or "uke" in Japan, if anything it's "neko" and "tachi")

* obviously I meant no means yes

Right on! Every time I see somebody bragging that they don't go near yaoi because of the rigid seme/uke roles, I know that's somebody who's avoiding yaoi for the 'cool points'. If you don't go near yaoi, you got no clue what's been really going on with it these days.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
uhh what. i see a lot of japanese fans still use seme and uke so ?????

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Neko and Tachi are terms for yuri, not yaoi. They're the equivalent of 'top' and 'bottom' for lesbians. It doesn't translate to men very well, considering that 'tachi' comes from a Takarazuka term meaning 'to play a man' or 'to pretend to be a man' and neko could be referring to the cat (thus, pussy...) or be nemuru no ko---the woman who lies beneath her.

" but its really harmful to say it's because of the lack of penises."

It's not harmful if the sentiment is personalized like OP's. OP apparently is a woman without a penis so to her it's more relatable if there are no penises involved.
Taking words out of context like that is harmful as well because it often leads to false accusations.
