You're confusing a traumatic experience with a genre. You can be scared of yaoi fangirls and still be okay with yaoi in general, and I think your frightened memory of that situation is just bleeding over and confusing your feelings about an entire genre.

Which is fine, really. You don't have to like yaoi.

I like yaoi but omg the one yaoi event I went to at a con was enough for me.

Who the hell decided that something like yaoi paddles were a thing that needed to be invented and brought to a public place?

I'm sorry, OP. I'd like to be able to take this secret seriously, but I can't stop laughing at the picture you used.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There are...certain contingents that seem to have little to no sense of boundaries and personal space. I've been to Yaoi-con (the one in San Francisco) a few times and they set some pretty strict, zero-tolerance rules precisely because of experiences like yours. I'm really sorry you had to go through that, and that it's affected your view of the genre :( Not saying you have to like or enjoy it or anything, but it sucks that it got associated with such a bad experience.

(But yeah, even as a yaoi fan myself, some groups of yaoi fans are absolutely batshit and should probably be quarantined before they seriously hurt somebody. Or threaten actors' wives/girlfriends for "getting in the way of" their tinhat fantasies of some secret gay romance.)

It's possible to dislike the fandom experience, but still like the source material.

Some parts of that fandom also creep me out, and I acknowledge some of the storylines are really problematic...but I just really like m/m combined with a manga art style.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely this, esp me being a queer woman myself, there are a lot of problematic elements of yaoi as a genre, consent issues and having "seme/uke" roles, reinforcing that there needs to be a "woman" in the relationship.

But just a reminder op, penis =/= male! I like yuri more as well, but its really harmful to say it's because of the lack of penises.

Possibly a dumb question but... what's the difference between yaoi and slash? I've looked up yaoi and it seems to be basically the same thing, but people in fandom seem to use these words in distinctive situations. So I'm a wee bit confused now.

I think that's kind of a normal thing, disliking something because of negative association and experiences. It's just a genre anyways, so no harm.

Also, I avoid large crowds of predictably annoying people who are likely rabid fans. Especially women because their shrieking hurts my ears more because I'm sexist like that.

Sorry that happened to you, OP. Holy crap.

I hate both yaoi and obnoxious yaoi fanbrats who think it's appropriate to yaoi paddle people/squee about their favorite graphic incest-rape-shota doujin in public/draw porn at school and shove it in people's faces asking them if they would masturbate to it. *has also had bad experiences with yaoi fangirls*

Penis straws. In my 13 years of fangirling, I have never come across those. Frankly, I could've gone another 13 years without knowing about them.

I'm sorry that happened to you, OP. I hope the genres you're into now attract a calmer, saner, portion of fandom.

I'm both slightly disturbed and amused by these penis straws. And I've never heard of a yaoi paddle before. After googling it I'm confused as to why such a thing exists or why anyone would want one.

As for your experience, I'm sorry. It sounds irritating and nerve-wracking and it's not terribly surprising that the event tainted things for you. Just remember that there are yaoi fans that aren't anything like the ones you encountered, and that you don't have to like anything anyway.

[personal profile] gamma_orionis 2013-05-25 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, sounds like a lousy experience :(

But oh my god, those straws. Do you think they make uncircumcised versions? Because if so, I am totally getting those for a party or something.

And yet another secret today where really I don't have much to say except I feel compelled to say YES, THIS.

Honestly there are fans of yaoi who are just, you know, fans of yaoi... and then there are the yaoi fangirls. Who I in no way want to be associated with, no matter how much content I produce that involves males being gay. And there is exactly one yaoi panel I ever will attend at cons - the "Chicken or Beef?" panel, which is run by a gay male and actually tends to focus more on the lulz than the hot - and actually gets into bara. Seriously the only yaoi panel I've ever been to that I enjoyed, rather than fleeing from the stupidity after a few minutes. I'm glad it's been branching out to more cons in recent years.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Are those dick chopsticks? That's fabulous.

On another note; I kind of sympathize. I support homosexuality, but yaoi fangirls are fucking insane. In fact I had the entire genre ruined for me by a backstabbing cunt who was obsessed with it, to the point of absurdity and missing the point of every show ever (she wrote shitty uke/seme fic, too). That shit has nothing to do with males attracted to other males, and everything to do with as maximizing the sparkly bishie hawtness in a single frame.

Sadly, this is an occurrence in fandom in general, it's not just something special that happens with yaoi fans in particular.

Go to any sort of fandom meet-up or con and you'll run into behaviors like this.

LOL those panels are the worst. I went to a yaoi panel with some friends and we were all excited and shit since it was our first time in a convention and it was disturbing (what did I expect though..)

I still enjoy my yaoi but I keep it to myself now..

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, I'm gay and I find the whole "I hate yaoi!" thing to be, I don't know, borderline offensive BECAUSE I think most western fans associate the term as two guys together in an anime (and sometimes not in an anime). I'm not saying you have to like it at all, but saying that all male/male pairings are something you do not support and actively hate, just ugh. Also, not all yaoi has strict seme/uke roles anymore - the genre is evolving, believe it or not, but if we label yaoi as any anime dude/dude pairing we like... obviously it's irrelevant.

Sorry, but secrets like these give me bad feelings.

and i'm not keen on yaoi fangirls but I'm still keen on reading slash.

that said it's really easy to avoid them online? don't go on slash websites/forums and block anyone who heckles you. it's perfectly okay to not like a gay pairing as long as you don't bash on it

[personal profile] truxillogical 2013-05-26 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know that feel, bro.

For the record, these days I kinda enjoy slash quite a lot. (Rarely explicit stuff, though. Reading smut's just never been my thing, dunno why.)

But when I was into anime, I HATED yaoi. Even now, if I think of it as "yaoi" instead of "slash" I go cold. A looooot of memories of super genki-girls in their teens just going freaking INSANE. And in hindsight, as an adult, I can see it as teenage girls a bit heady at the concept of expressing and celebrating sexuality and going overboard on the silliness because in a fandom community you basically have an echo-chamber for squee.

But I still want nothing to do with that, really.

I didn't start liking slash until I was in a much tamer community where most of the fellow fans were older than me and there was a, for lack of a better word, maturity.

(Oddly enough, in the case of that first calmer fandom, it was the introduction of an over-enthusiastic teenage slasher who reeeeallly loved yaoi-ish elements that managed to make the fandom group fall apart. Most of the fandom just didn't feel like putting up with those shenanigans and, well...meph.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Never go to Yaoi panels. That's where the worst of the worst congregate, someone showed underage stuff during one at a con I went to.
