Okay TMBG secret, hell yes.

Secondly, this is adorable, OP. And honestly its such a fascinating world we live in and I can totally see why you'd love this album so much. It's easily one of my favorite TMBG albums! My favorite song from it is What Is A Shooting Star?

I think that shows how great TMBG can be! I don't even follow them that much but I definitely appreciate the emotion that can go in their music, even the educational stuff (I loved listening to How Does the Sun Shine? when I was taking Astronomy class). I tear up whenever I listen to Ana Ng just because of how earnest the vocals are.

TMBG is awesome like that. I remember one time I was going through a bad break-up, almost 20 years ago now, and of all things, the song that made me almost cry? "Shoehorn With Teeth". Seriously. Because... he wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth, 'cause he knows there's no such thing. He asks a girl if they can both sit in a chair, but he doesn't get nervous - she's not really there.

I also think "Older" is one of the most terrifying songs I've ever heard. I guess these examples are sort of the polar opposite of what you're talking about in this secret, but the fact TMBG can capture concepts that are so elementary and ever-present, and yet often too complicated for me to ever actually find words for, and they CAN find words and metaphors to summarize them - that's one reason I love them so much.

"Ana Ng" has the line, "I don't want the world. I just want your half," that just perfectly sums up the whole song, and it's so right in context, and I just love it.

TMBG just make the best songs. I've learned a lot, like with "James K. Polk", or just had the perfect song for my mood, and no one does it quite like TMBG.

it sounds to me that this just means that the people behind the songs are doing it right (and so are you!)

Give me a recommendation

I've only heard like 2 songs by TMBG, but I hear so much about them that I want to buy some of their music. What songs/CDs would you guys recommend?

my introduction to TMBG was with 'Ana Ng', 'I'm Impressed', 'Don't Let's Start', 'Birdhouse in Your Soul' and 'We're the Mesopotamians'... I then bought their 'best of' album which is called 'A User's Guide to They Might Be Giants', which was a fantastic way to get into their music as it's a back catalogue which has lots of different songs from different albums.
their album from a couple of years ago, Join Us, was absolutely fab, too. (my favourites on that album: 'Can't Keep Johnny Down', 'Never Knew Love', 'Canajoharie', 'You Probably Get That a Lot')
If you want to check them out their youtube channel, ParticleMen, has pretty much every song they've ever released?
(sorry for wittering. I just love TMBG a lot...)

The two really, really popular albums of theirs (as much as anything of theirs has ever been popular) were Apollo 18 and Flood - both very good albums, and probably anything you've heard came from Flood ("Particle Man", "Istanbul", "Birdhouse In Your Soul"). My personal favorite is Lincoln, though it's a little more offbeat than the above two, likewise The Spine, and their latest album, Nanobots, is growing on me really fast ("Call You Mom" in particular just about killed me the first time I heard it).

But Apollo 18 and/or Flood are probably the best introduction to the group; I've known many people who discovered them through one or the other, me among them. I heard one song on local college radio and loved it, then heard it again when my art teacher played Apollo 18 during class, and loved the rest of the album just as much.

Yeah, pretty much this. Listen to Flood, Lincoln, or Apollo 18 (probably in roughly that order).

Definitely avoid their most recent albums. They've turned into an ouroborus, except the snake's head is up its own ass.

I don't have this one, but I've heard some of their other educational/children's albums and you're right, they do great things.

I think you'd really love the Cosmos series, OP. Same sort of sense of wonder and holy fuck the world is amazing.
