RPS is inherently stalkerish and creepy. Anyone who tries to say otherwise is at least a bit delusional. Honestly, they're keeping tabs on the things an actor or celebrity does during their non-working time; the people they hang out with/date/are related to, the clothes they wear, where they shop, where they go for vacation, comb over their every word in interviews, and collect photos of them as they go about their personal day - all in the name of finding "evidence" for their being in a sexual relationship with someone they know or details to make their fics better.

It wasn't creepy to you before because you were willing to ignore that in favor of you personal fantasies and your ship, and no one was doing it to you.

hm. since a lot of this is stuff that every single gossip magazine does, and many fans do, do you think the intent is integral to the creepiness?
I've always thought that compared to fans not respecting boundaries IRL (ie. actually stalking/doxxing), rpf is pretty mild.

I think gossip magazines and such are really stalkery as well, and part of the problem. They've normalized this proding and crossing personal boundaries of people in the public eye, so people don't realize or don't think of how problematic it really is when they decide to RPS.

Just because someone is famous doesn't mean they need to give up all right to personal privacy. They signed up to be an actor/politician/singer/model/whatever, not to make every part of their life an open book to anyone with passing curiosity. There shouldn't be any "comes with the territory", they should be able to do what they love without cameras flashing when they're out with their kids/shopping/vacationing/showering, and finding a report on their every move beside the candybar they want to buy.

I really hate the very idea of the paparazzi in general though. It's just so invasive. I can never stop thinking how vehemently I would hate having that done to me; it bothers me how this pov rarely occurs to the people that buy those magazines, RPS fans, and just plain rabid fans.

Enjoy the work they put out and get paid for, write your fic if you have to, but do it from what they allow to be public knowledge; there's no need poke so far you know how they take their coffee, what sort of shampoo and deodorent they use, the name and location of every person they ever dated, or the precise location of every mole, birthmark or freckle they have if they don't choose to say.

I really liked the way Charlie Brooker characterized those magazines "they cater to the casual psychopath".

As he noted, if you put the same kind of content as appears in those magazine into a scrapbook you'd be arrested as a suspected serial killer.

I like you, anon. +1 to everything.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
+1 OMG, so much yes to everything in this. This celebrity culture we have now makes we wonder how much talent we're losing on. I know I don't want to be famous b/c I don't want the papparazi stalking me 24/7 and taking pictures of me through the freaking windows of my house. There really need to be laws against this behaviour. I wonder how many other people feel the same way I do; how many decide against being actors, politicans, etc. b/c of the whole prying thing into every single thing do and have done every moment of their life.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Not just how many potential greats are we missing out on because they're avoiding all that, how many great talents have we lost because they've caved under or been driven away by the pressure?

I agree with all of this. You've described the fan culture I think of as creepy and invasive. Actually, worshipful seems like a good word too? The magazines/fans build the people up to unreal standards and it creates the desire to see them fall down.
I guess I just don't associate this behaviour with the rpf I've read at all, for whatever reason. I'm not really into it though, so maybe the majority of RPF writers are going through Harry Styles' garbage looking for what flavour of pizza pops he likes for *accuracy*. What do I know.

You're confusing RPF with stalking. I think publishing self-insert fics with oneself and a celebrity on the internet where anybody could read it is really creepy, too, but writing (smut-free) stories for yourself and maybe a few friends? I started writing real-people stories when I used to make up elaborate stories of a fellow flute player and how we were going to get married. If I didn't know them, like the girl I met on the bus a year and a half ago, I'd just make stuff up. (I don't have the patience to watch interviews or collect pictures unless they're really neat, like the photoshop of Loki guy holding a box of absolutely adorable cats, and to be honest it was mostly because of the kittens.) When I started writing for school and professionally, I'd just change the names and a few details. I even got one of them published (albeit without very successful sales). Would you consider that creepy?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends. Everyone has fantasy's about crushes and stuff, celebrity or not, and I don't really have a problem if someone prefers to write them down for whatever reason, but when you're combing over their every word to get the *exact* cadence of their voice or digging for intimate details of their family and personal history that's a problem.

Oh, damn, family details? I mean, seriously, don't be invasive. Don't be that person. If it's on Wikipedia, fine, it's probably wrong anyway.

Ugh, reading that made me feel dirty. Have some cute kittens:

Loki's army of kittens confirmed for Thor 2!

I ship RPS - as in, I read fics, sometimes write them, but I don't believe for a second there's anything true or real in them.
I also try to hear as little as I possibly can about the people involved because it screws with my suspension of disbelief when dealing with the show/movie (I.e. I stop seeing John Doe the character and I start seeing Jack Smith the actor playing a character called John Doe)

What now?
