(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)But yeah that's seriously creepy. Privacy violations are frowned upon for a reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)It wasn't creepy to you before because you were willing to ignore that in favor of you personal fantasies and your ship, and no one was doing it to you.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)I've always thought that compared to fans not respecting boundaries IRL (ie. actually stalking/doxxing), rpf is pretty mild.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)Just because someone is famous doesn't mean they need to give up all right to personal privacy. They signed up to be an actor/politician/singer/model/whatever, not to make every part of their life an open book to anyone with passing curiosity. There shouldn't be any "comes with the territory", they should be able to do what they love without cameras flashing when they're out with their kids/shopping/vacationing/showering, and finding a report on their every move beside the candybar they want to buy.
I really hate the very idea of the paparazzi in general though. It's just so invasive. I can never stop thinking how vehemently I would hate having that done to me; it bothers me how this pov rarely occurs to the people that buy those magazines, RPS fans, and just plain rabid fans.
Enjoy the work they put out and get paid for, write your fic if you have to, but do it from what they allow to be public knowledge; there's no need poke so far you know how they take their coffee, what sort of shampoo and deodorent they use, the name and location of every person they ever dated, or the precise location of every mole, birthmark or freckle they have if they don't choose to say.

As he noted, if you put the same kind of content as appears in those magazine into a scrapbook you'd be arrested as a suspected serial killer.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 02:30 am (UTC)(link)I guess I just don't associate this behaviour with the rpf I've read at all, for whatever reason. I'm not really into it though, so maybe the majority of RPF writers are going through Harry Styles' garbage looking for what flavour of pizza pops he likes for *accuracy*. What do I know.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 06:24 am (UTC)(link)I also try to hear as little as I possibly can about the people involved because it screws with my suspension of disbelief when dealing with the show/movie (I.e. I stop seeing John Doe the character and I start seeing Jack Smith the actor playing a character called John Doe)
What now?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)It makes me wonder if people every write RPF about people they know and post it online. It sounds like something people would do, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)I guess I'm just weird like that.

Not that this is happening to your friend, but that you've had an awakening. RPF is creepy.

I mean, I'll happily write a story about Jon Stewart, Dragon Slayer, but that doesn't mean I'm creeping around his trips to the grocery store and complaining on the Internet about the people he watches baseball with on the weekends.
Sorry this is happening to you, OP -- it isn't necessarily going anywhere dangerous, but it's still not okay. And it might be prudent to get some screencaps, on the off chance you guys ever need to take legal action against this person :|
Aaannnnd this is why I stay far, far away from RPF
The stuff it takes to make "good" or "accurate" RPF? That's bad.
The extents some of the more extreme fans will go for RPF? That's very bad.
And as some others mentioned below, gossip magazines and invasive paparazzi are very much part of the problem. :(
*starts extending 10-ft pole*
Good end at least.
OP here!
(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)I admit that I have read gossip magazines and interviews and used THAT as references for writing, but that's as creepy as I got!
In the fic author's defense, my friend and his band are pretty careless when it comes to protecting their privacy, they do include references to very specfic places in their lyrics...
Fortunately it doesn't seem like that person is ever going to attempt anything bad against us, but it still makes me pretty uncomfortable to know that someone out there is watching us from a close enough distance to see exactly what we buy when we're shopping for a party...
