I'm not someone to kink-shame, usually, but oh god this trend needs to die already. I usually avoid A/B/O fics because I already know I won't like that kind of universe, but today I gave in to temptation because:

a) I was really craving porn with bottom!Q (this was a 00Q Skyfall fanfic)
b) I like the normal brand of D/s

I... I should have backbuttoned, really. The problem is, the fic was really well written and I've been cursed with the inability to stop reading something once I've started (so I suppose I kind of brought this on myself), but even though it kept my interest piqued I felt as if something was crawling on my skin and am now vaguely nauseous. The sex and lubricated assholes are not the problem, and while I don't look for MPREG because it doesn't interest me I don't mind it either. I don't even have a problem with the (admittedly problematic) matter of "ownership" (re: I do really like my D/s), though it being a biological imperative makes me rise my eyebrow. But the politics of a society composed with A/B/O dynamics is absolutely scary and reminds me too much of real-life sexism and rape culture to be anything but uncomfortable. What are these authors even thinking, holy fuck.

I need a drink. Never again.

And I think there needs to be more of 'em. :) I sometimes dislike them, but I love, love, love some of them (even the "skeevy" ones) but esp. the ones that turn the trope on its head.

I wanted something that turned the trope on its head, because I don't like dismissing things entirely without sampling them, but ok, no, I now fully recognize they ain't my cup of earl gray. Maybe I'll be sounding like a damn SJW now, but with all the raping and sexism parallels going on with the trope, I will celebrate the day the craze goes down a little.

So you read something you already knew you wouldn't like and now you're surprised you're squicked out, good job.

Going by the summary, I was really hoping it would be a subversion of the genre and I wouldn't get squicked. :(

Edit: I should clarify I found it via a Rec and it was touted as a fic with a good worldbuilding. Otherwise I wouldn't have risked it.

I feel the same way. Like the D/s, fine with the weird, but the biological imperative and politics just make me uncomfortable.

What actually helped me out is someone explaining that the kink behind the whole A/B/O was exactly the lack of choice and the entire society built around that. Obvious, yeah, but it clarified it for me the fact that it's that skeevy on purpose.

ayrt I hadn't either! It seems obvious, but nope. It's really helped me relax my reaction to the whole verse. Still don't like it, but I understand it a bit more.

Ah, yes. The good ol' "I don't like it so it needs to be banned" approach. Because no one in fandom has had ever had a problem with people outside of fandom shaming us for our fandom activities, we need someone on the inside to tell us all why we're so wrong and totally discount the fact the fanfiction is, y'know, fiction.

If you wanted a discussion about A/B/O dynamics, you could have just asked. You didn't have to make a new thread with a title designed specifically to offend and shame. The only person here who should be ashamed is you.

No, you just said the trend needs to die. And it really doesn't even if you don't like it.

Yeah. What was even the point of the original comment except to be shame-y? It even starts with the classic "I don't mean to be ____, BUT...." line.

It...really depends on how the set up is handled, imo. I've seen something that was eerily similar in a published series that's been out or several years that actually does a very good job with it.

Basically, the more dominate [or more 'alpha'] a person is, the stronger their instincts to protect the less dominate usually are as well. There are a few who abuse it, and the story that addresses that does go out of it's way to make sure that they're viewed as the bad guys, and not the norm.

tl;dr: This set up can actually be very, very good when it's done well...it's just that in fandom it's not normally done well.

I wanted to give it an oportunity. If you could rec me a fic that does a service to the trope I swear I will come back and apologize.

I don't like it either but I don't read it. I'm really just blown away that you went in there knowing you don't like it and then came over here to bash the trope and the writers.

There is something very wrong with you. As someone else said, it doesn't need to go away just because you don't like it. Just don't read it and let others have their fun.
