all guides and advice feel like another language

Basically my reaction to reading the second half of this secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-29 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone on here linked a gen BBC!Sherlock in GC recently, and it was all about the characters playing Warcraft....I understood about 15% of the dialogue in those scenes (which made up the bulk of the fic). I have known people IRL who had to "quit cold turkey" because they were sinking both time AND money into the thing. People who spoke in the same way as the end of this secret, and the BBC!Sherlock fic.

TL;DR: Does World of Warcraft meet Lifton's criteria? LOL.

I didn't even notice there was a second half until this comment.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
yeah that's why I included it... it's all just... gibberish to me and I feel like it shouldn't be if I'm this invested in the game. :

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
haha and that's not even talking about raiding and tweaking your rotation to max your DPS and your gearscore and whether you're in tier yet...

As a fellow WoW player who have hit the level cap (not for Mist of Pandaria, I am a poor student, haven't found the money to buy it yet)

And I have no idea how to play, seriously I am too scared to go into dungeons (I don't want to suck), I am decent at Battlegrounds (used to be great for a while, but then my gear got too low lvl) I quest and get killed by Hordes for the most part.

If my best friend didn't play WoW, I wouldn't even know half of what I do, I always call her up when I have choices and she tells me what to do and then I promptly forget abou it.

Oh right what I was supposed to say was, you are not alone Secret Maker!

I agree.

For me, I hit the cap of the time just by questing alone. I've never really done dungeons or raids.

(sorry, using an Aion icon. I love that game. Left WoW for it when Cata came. Haven't been back since).

op of secret - I have done some of the scenarios (I think they are pandaria unique but idk, it's like a 3-man dungeon thing) and been okay. I've partnered with two raid groups and both times I was treated like crap because apparently I didn't do a great job (I got lost from the group in one of the dungeons because I didn't know where to go and I suck at kiting). I play by myself and panick when someone invites me to a group and decline and go hide in a town feeling like a loser.

Maybe it's my monitor setting's, but the last half of that secret is illegible. I can just about see there's some kind of text there, but that's it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-29 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
i can't read the darker half of this secret, but is this by any chance your first MMORPG? everquest was a lot like that for me, and i only learned how to play through cruel and lengthy osmosis

otherwise, maybe try going over to wow_noobs on livejournal if you feel like you want to try asking for help publicly again. the community doesn't get a lot of traffic, but there's generally a few nice people hanging around to answer questions and explain stuff

sa, so that's what it is

Every gamer goes through this, OP. The trick is to start small. Read on the forums when you can, try to figure out what people are talking about. Read guides, and even if you don't totally understand keep trying to. Eventually things will start falling into place. I don't play WoW but I'm sure there's about a million glossaries and strat guides online to look at.

(This assumes that you actually WANT to be good, because being good at a game takes lots of time and effort. If you don't really care enough to do the leg work, you can still have fun, but obviously any activity that requires more skill like raiding or pvp might be closed off to you.)

Noxxic really is a great place to start because it spells out everything: spec, gear, which abilities you should use when, etc. Before I stopped playing, I used to go there after patches to re-learn how to play my alts.

As everyone else has said, every gamer goes through this at some point. MMOs can be ridiculously hard to catch on to. One of my absolute favorite resources is noxxic.com. They have pages for a bunch of different games, but they keep up to date information for spec, rotation, stat priority, reforging, gemming, enchanting, and some other stuff for each class/spec for pve and pvp. It's so useful to just be able to click your class and spec and copy from that. Of course, it's not an instafix, but it can really make it easier to just have it broken down for you.

I've been playing since 2006. If you want to PM me via my DW I'll send you my battletag ID, and I'll be happy to help.

I play both Alliance and Horde and have leveled one ( and sometimes two or three) of every class but warrior and rogue. (Monks are level 50.)

I feel you, OP. I've played since launch and especially after this last expansion, I feel like a duck out of water.

Here's two things that helped me greatly:

http://www.icy-veins.com/ - This place is FANTASTIC. It breaks down everything for you in easy to understand chunks. Just go to Classes and pick your spec and viola, it tells you your good glyphs, your rotations, explains all the talents...it's fantastic!

And, once you have the hang of that part...

http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/gear - I don't know how many people still use this, but I still go back to it to check on what's best for my current gear and to find upgrades. It helps you make hit cap and all that crap that you need.

All that being said, if you want, I can try and help you out. I don't have a 90 in every class but I can do my best. :) Can you at least tell me your class and preferred spec? Or the class/spec you want to learn?

Hey OP, my partner and I are casual players, but if you're looking for some folks who won't be all judgey at you for being confused, feel free to PM me and I can give you our BattleTags.

Even after playing for several years, every time there's a new patch out, I'm essentially relearning my class/spec. Which is why I haven't switched my arcane mage over to frost, even though frost is pretty much godmode right now. Arcane's DPS was top for like...one patch, but I'm used to it and FUCK THE HATERS >8|

If you do PvE fine, then I don't quite get how you "don't know how to do anything"? Especially if you've made it to 90.

I am envious of people who can PVP well, though. I'm pretty sure that sort of flexible thinking plus reaction time is beyond me. Give me a good old predictable NPC any day.

I can only echo the other people who've suggested noxxic.com and icyveins, they're great sites that break the information down nicely. A lot of people I know kept suggesting elitist-jerks to me but I just could not understand anything on that site, it was far too number crunchy and my brain wouldn't wrap around the information. I imagine it's great if you do understand it though.

And to make you feel better OP I've been playing since BC, know my stuff for PvE but shunt me into PvP? OHMYGODWHATDOTHESEBUTTONSDO? Not even kidding.

For what it's worth, anon, I've been playing for about five years and now do progression raiding with our not-at-all-cutting-edge guild and know my class/spec fairly well, but I'm still terrible at PvP after all this time. And back in the late TBC era when I started, it took me months to just figure out talents and specs, and even longer to decipher what stats I should be gearing for.

Everything--whether PvE or PvP--takes a lot of practice, and a lot of reading up. Go check out the guides everyone else is recommending, and see if that helps you out. Good luck!

[personal profile] ecoerrante 2013-05-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I...kind of get PvP? I'm learning it by leveling a new BM hunter and doing it as I level, so it's just adding elements and attacks slowly as I go.

Dungeons are actually a lot of fun once you start doing them. Sure, you'll sometimes run across people who will bitch you out for making a mistake, but as long as you follow the general rules*, most people aren't going to say much - particularly if you go through the LFD tool.

If you want to hit me up to go through/help/whatever, feel free to pm me your name and we'll see what we can do? =3

*For hunters this usually means Don't Have Growl On, Don't Pull, and Keep Buffs Up

... I hope one of the PMs was from you. and don't be scared off by the other people geeking out here. I happily stand by my offer to help you.

(and the Battletag stuff can be a little confusing, so if that's holding you back let me know and I'll walk you through it.)

In my linguistics class, this girl gave a presentation on the language of EverQuest. I spent quite a lot of time on that game back in the day, and I still didn't understand half of her presentation. 'XD

I guess WoW is the same way. 'xD

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, well, you're not alone. Most people who play are godawful. All I can suggest is to try to get through some decent guides on icy veins or your class forums/role forums. As long as you understand the acronyms there really shouldn't be too many problems.

Take those guides with a grain of salt however as they are typically written for higher level play, there is wiggle room of course. Also, if you're clicking or keyboard turning please stop.
