I wish I lived in a big enough city that I could survive without a car.

I think there's also the matter of some cities having MUCH better public transportation than others.

This - my cities public transportation is actually bad enough the national government told it to get it's act together recently.

As a film/tv grad I'm trying to apply for jobs in New York WAY more than Los Angeles. Because I'm still trying to get a driver's license, and I'd much prefer to live in a place where I wouldn't have to drive at all.

I used to. It was great. The only thing a car was useful for was hauling large stuff and getting out of town. I biked everywhere or took PT. Now I'm in a much smaller place, and it's far too hot & humid for me to cycle far without catching heat exhaustion during the day, and PT is woeful. Plus, baby. So I'm glad I have a car even though I feel shit about it.

Hey OP, if you don't want or need to drive, why not. I think it's really useful for independent travel, and with a baby fuss-free, but that's not what everyone needs. Or can afford. Cars are expensive. And occasional taxis are cheaper than a car anyway. I think a lot of London don't own cars anyway so I can understand Watson not driving.

right? where I live we don't have a subway system, regular buses, or taxis (unless you call a cab company). the sidewalks are also pretty awkward, frequently switching sides of the road, so it's impossible to walk or bike to everywhere you need to go.

I'm 20 and I can't drive a car due to anxiety, and I live in a small mid-west town where the only jobs in walking distance are fast food service jobs. They are always dominated by the local highschoolers and by the looks of things nobody keeps a job there for long. I feel guilty as hell because I haven't gotten a job yet and I'm started to get pretty scared about what I'm going to do.

Didn't ever think about the other adults out there who don't or can't drive. That does make me feel a little bit more hopeful.
