I wish I lived in a big enough city that I could survive without a car.

I think there's also the matter of some cities having MUCH better public transportation than others.

As a film/tv grad I'm trying to apply for jobs in New York WAY more than Los Angeles. Because I'm still trying to get a driver's license, and I'd much prefer to live in a place where I wouldn't have to drive at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to. It was great. The only thing a car was useful for was hauling large stuff and getting out of town. I biked everywhere or took PT. Now I'm in a much smaller place, and it's far too hot & humid for me to cycle far without catching heat exhaustion during the day, and PT is woeful. Plus, baby. So I'm glad I have a car even though I feel shit about it.

Hey OP, if you don't want or need to drive, why not. I think it's really useful for independent travel, and with a baby fuss-free, but that's not what everyone needs. Or can afford. Cars are expensive. And occasional taxis are cheaper than a car anyway. I think a lot of London don't own cars anyway so I can understand Watson not driving.

right? where I live we don't have a subway system, regular buses, or taxis (unless you call a cab company). the sidewalks are also pretty awkward, frequently switching sides of the road, so it's impossible to walk or bike to everywhere you need to go.

I can understand that. You don't need a character or actor to be like you to enjoy them/their work but when they are similar in a way that matters to you it raises your spirits.

And hey, it's okay to be an adult and not drive. I currently don't drive and I get a lot of shit for it. I mean, I hate driving but the reason I don't is that I can't afford it right now. So I'm well acquainted with public transport and stuff. That's a completely legitimate and fine way to get around. So tell whoever is bothering you about driving to suck it.

I grew up in a middle-sized town, where everyone learned to drive at 16, so I've always felt embarrassed I never learned (20 years old now). Learning about adults that don't drive makes me feel a bit better.
I remember reading how Carey Mulligan had to learn to drive for one of her films, and that made me feel good. A lot of British actors don't know how to drive I found, though.

I also find this ridiculously validating and encouraging. And it makes me hate even more that going to have to suck it up and get my license soon.

Your secret made me smile. It took me forever to learn how to drive a stick and if I lived in a bicycle-friendly city, that would be great.

You should feel no shame, OP.

I'm 24 and I can't drive. I went through lessons when I was 16 and discovered that my attention span on the road is shit. If people ask me why I don't drive, I honestly tell them that putting me on the road is going to get someone killed.

It's not a universal skill set that everybody innately has.

Shamefully? Is it that bad to not drive? :o I had the impression that most people in large cities don't drive, or at least not very often.

I think this is characteristic for America - the USA is a very "driving" country simply because it can be hard to live without a car. Not driving seems to be perfectly normal in my environment. Hell, some people simply don't have anything to drive in (if we're not counting bikes).

Still, good for you, I guess. For some reason I find it sweet.

really? Cool :) I also don't drive (I can't tell left from right plus I am generally terrified of cars) but it is so hard in Texas :\

Fully functioning adult who doesn't drive, here. Yes, it helps being in a big city.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I've learned but never gotten to the drivers test part and I'm 27.
It kind of limits my job prospects. I live in the city and don't want a car, but I really need to take a few lessons and do the damn test as soon as I have some $$$

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of the opposite. I learnt to drive a manual (stick) when I was 7 or 8. We lived in the middle of nowhere, so you needed a car or a horse just to get to the front gate and back. I even had my own car. It was pink! I remember being so excited about it being pink, even if it was old and slow.

When I went to high school closer to the coast, I taught all my friends how to drive, because we have no driver's ed. classes. They thought it was pretty cool that I already knew how.

I am licensed and I own a car (two if you count the pink one), but my eyesight is actually so bad (only in my 20s) that I feel really uncomfortable driving on public roads now. I can pass the vision test, so legally I can, but I just wouldn't do it.

It sucks, but thankfully my friends remember who helped teach them to drive and are usually willing to taxi me around if I can't get public transport.

I don't drive due to a medical condition, haven't for about 15 years now. Legally I am able to drive but only during the day and in good weather conditions. I work shifts and weather is... changeable at best where I live, so I just don't. Normally it's not a problem, I walk to work and there are buses and trains near by. I hate it when the driving majority just assumes everyone of age drives, and then thinks of me as a second class citizen when they find out I don't. Grr.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-02 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP, I'm soon to be 29 (at the end of the month) and have never driven a car in my life. I don't have plans to change that either. It's so nice to know that there are other adults in the world who don't drive, and it's not just me (of course I know logically that there are going to be people who don't drive, but it sometimes feels like there aren't).

(Anonymous) 2013-06-02 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I can't understand people who don't learn how to drive. (Unless they live in a big city where driving is unfeasible, like London or NY.) I live in a small-medium city, and when I was twenty or so I was shocked when I learned that the guy I was dating (who was also in his early 20's) had never learned, and never really felt any need to - he was fine having his mom or aunt shuttle him around. When I was 25 or so I dated another guy who didn't have a car, and I'd have to spend all my money on gas driving to the other side of the city to see him. Since then I've sworn off guys who can't (or won't) drive.

I got my license as soon as I was legally old enough, and I've never looked back. There's a kind of freedom, knowing that at any time I could go anywhere I wanted to. I get insane cabin fever whenever my car's in the shop for a few days, even if there's nowhere in particular I need to go. And I love cross-country roadtrips, driving for hours and watching the scenery pass by.

Oh honey, you sound very young. I don't mean to take anything away from the Martin Freeman love, but MOST of the world's functioning adults don't drive. Some don't because they can't afford a car (nevermind fuel!) but plenty of others live in cities where public transportation is far more common.

In countries outside the U.S., adult = driving a car is not the default at all. Even within the U.S., cities like New York are full of adults who don't drive or own cars. Broaden your horizons, OP. Not just for this reason, but because life's so much better when you do.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-02 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't matter where you live or what you're doing at the moment. Knowing how to drive a car and having a driver's license that will very likely be useful at some point in your life, so you should learn how. Also, a driver's license is a good form of ID to have. Basically not having a driver's license is shortsighted and a tad selfish.

I was really opposed to driving because it seemed overwhelming (how the hell am I supposed to watch everyone else on the road AND watch the road itself at the same time?!) and I thought I'd hate it, so I waited until 20 (I'm 27 now) to get my license, but it turned out I was completely wrong. Keeping track of everything on the road is nowhere near as difficult as I'd thought it would be, and I actually really love to drive. Having the freedom to be able to just decide to go somewhere, and go, at any time, is pretty awesome.
