dude, which books did you read in which they didn't give a shit about each other?
i don't even ship it but i still picked up on the fact that they were really close friends.

remus was clearly devastated by sirius' betrayal and then, in turn, by his death and sirius was so happy to have him back.
through all the books jkr made a point out of showing that all four marauders were incredibly close friends, including peter, and just because sirius was closer to james than he was to remus doesn't mean that he wasn't close to him at all.

they suspected each other because war makes enemies out of friends and sirius didn't send snape to the shack to ruin remus's life, he did it because he was a stupid teenager with no regard for consequences. he would have done the same if james had been the werewolf.
it's made clear that remus has forgiven him, which is why sirius doesn't constantly beat himself up about it, but that doesn't mean he's not sorry at all.

i think you're misreading their relationship because you're annoyed by your friends' obsession with the pairing which i get, but that still doesn't make it true.

Actually, if we are going to bring Peter into this, the impression she gave there was that he was a tagalong with no redeeming qualities who James and Sirius kept around for hero-worship/laughs respectively.

Which always confused the shit out of me. We were told this, but were never shown even a glimmer of redeemability or anything remotely positive about him at any point in his life - in fact even when anyone talked about him there was never any inkling of that - which leaves us to wonder WHY they would have done ANYTHING for him.
