I don't think that Sirius ever "didn't give a shit" about Remus personally, but if you've ever been betrayed by someone you trusted, it would be easy to understand how much angrier it makes you. To be betrayed by someone you don't give a shit about? Big deal! To be betrayed by someone you care about? You want revenge and you want it NOW.
That said, I never did feel that Sirius and Remus were very close friends, but I think for them a huge part of the problem was trying to get over the whole, "Up until very recently we actually thought the other was a bad guy working against us." That's hard to just get over.
I feel like in Book Four, things were looking up for their friendship, but considering Sirius dies so fast, I find it very hard to believe that they grew to be super chummy like Sirius and James were before. That's a lot of baggage to put behind oneself in order to accomplish that.
Either way, even if they did get close again, I felt the books gave nods specifically to James regarding Sirius, particularly in that he was still sort of looking to replace James with Harry. That was probably the best look depth-wise at Sirius's character for me, because it said SO MUCH about him.
But in the end, it's hard to say. I agree with the sentiment that the OP seemed to try to be expressing, which was, "I don't see them together" (I don't personally), and "My friends are twits for being whiny about Rowling not justifying their ship" (I also agree with this). It's one thing to like a ship, and quite another to think the author has to justify its existence to you when it wasn't an intended ship to begin with. (The author's mentions could be "close friends" or "friends" or "lovers" but if the author chooses to leave it at friendship, that's their prerogative.
Just my two cents. :)
