Literature is a matter of taste always, and not everyone will find a "classic" book enjoyable to read.
For example, On the Road (Jack Keroauc) gets so much exclamation over it to this day, but I thought it was a shitty book cover to cover. I could appreciate some of the morals that CAN be drawn from the book, but I honestly don't feel like the author put them in there on purpose, or was trying to teach anything to anyone by writing the book. Mostly it just seemed like a story about a doormat following his shitty womanizing asshole friend around taking notes. If it had been written like a nature documentary I might have liked it better.

I feel pretty much the same way about most of the Beats; it's only when you widen out the circle to, say, Denise Levertov or Gregory Corso (who is fantastic), that I get interested in their writing. Mostly, they just seem super douchey to me (especially Kerouac and Burroughs ugh) which usually isn't a problem for me. I can usually separate my reaction to a work of fiction or art or whatever from my reaction to its creator but not so for the Beats for some reason.
