I just don't understand why two men can't love each other platonically.

Although now that the entire point of the Marauder/Lily/Snape backstory appears to be that they screwed each other and themselves over royally from day one, there's something tragic about even two lovers coming to suspect the other of betrayal. But I don't see anything between them past that. OTOH, I don't care that other people do. To each their own.

But if you love someone romantically, you're usually more prone to ignoring all evidence pointing to them being bad, rather than suspecting them when your friends don't. Sirius was the only one to suspect Remus to be a traitor.
