I think the Pacific Northwest is kind of the exception to the "USians are nosy" thing. There's not a lot of faux-chipperness or invading other people's space here, and that's just the way I like it. But when the situation calls for interaction, people tend to be genuinely pleasant.

But I lived in central Pennsylvania before, and it was pretty much on the opposite end of the spectrum. There was a lot of... I don't know, hostility thinly disguised by excessive friendliness or something. And people seemed to feel like they were entitled to conversation with you, even if you're just a complete stranger trying to go about your day.

I'm in very-western Canada, and it's about the same as the Pacific NW since... well, it's practically the same area. There's usually not much for nosiness in public, and if you do get too friendly people get weirded out. I know I do. But small talk is totally okay.

True, and I've noticed that small talk here is more user-friendly, if that makes sense. People actually seem to be able to gauge if you would mind, and don't get huffy if you don't engage in return. And will let the conversation drop if you show signs of wanting to be somewhere else. And it seems like it would be seen as really super rude to start talking to someone if they seem occupied, even if "seems occupied" means "probably thinking, leave them alone."

I think there's just a lack of forcefulness when it comes to conversation, and it's nice.
