Where are you hanging out that the words 'gender essentialist' are even being muttered? What the hell does that even mean?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-03 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It means "thinking that because a person is of a certain gender, they have particular qualities pertaining to that particular gender". Like, "you're a woman? So you love pink, dolls and baking." I guess OP tried to call out what he saw as stereotypes (probably the feminisation of one half of a slash couple) and what others saw as breaking gender stereotypes. But that's pure speculation on my part.

So instead of using commonly understood English, they made up a pretentious label.

OP, you're dealing with the SJW brigade. Run while you can.

They didn't make it up, actually, it's used in academic contexts. It's verbose and obscure to anyone who's not familiar with the phrase, but it's a real concept.

Really? Foot in my mouth then. Color me edumacated.

I still say it sounds pretentious.

Most things sound pretentious when coming from SJWs.

fwiw i've never actually seen someone get called a 'gender essentialist' before, which further makes me think the OP is probably a troll

it's a useful term, but it's always used to describe attitudes and beliefs, because on its own it's not really an effective label

but basically yeah it's a rabbit hole of pretentiousness

I find gender essentialism to be a useful term/concept for discussion (having first encountered it in college), but agreed, OP should run.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-04 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's a term propagated by kids who spend a lot of money on classes that essentially don't teach you how to balance a checkbook.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-04 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
...this could mean so many things.

Is it about people not taking that personal finance course that they really should have taken (because hey, it's useful)? Or is it a reference to people majoring in things that are considered "soft?" Or is it about people taking on too much debt in the process of going to school?
