Re: 26: At least you tried, and they aren't your thing - that's fair and fine. You have valid arguments, and you're not one of those (sorry!) morons who go "Eeew, books! Liek omg, Im not touching them!" so the secret wasn't really aimed at you. (The plot really picks up speed after Rivendell, though - give it another try? I will admit to having problems with the prologue and the first few chapters, too.)
And pssst, it's Tolkien. ;)

The first time I tried to read the books, I was ten. I never made it past Rivendell. Then I went back a couple years later, and I read all three books, plus the appendices and The Silmarillion in a single summer. It was awesome.

Rivendell is important - either you make it there and stay or go on, or you don't make it at all, that goes for the readers as well as for Frodo and the others.
