On the first page and I can already tell you that the term "duo tang folder" was used in public school when I was a kid, and I didn't live anywhere near the Canadian border. It's simply a type of folder with brads in it (NOT a three ring binder, do you see any rings in that folder geez)

Well at least I know what 'candy bars' are now. I've always thought of 'candy' as being those boiled sweets like lollipops, not chocolate.

And apparently, Smarties are not Smarties in America. I think I'm going to stop looking at this blog now.

...They are smarties. Just because they aren't the same as your smarties doesn't mean that they're wrong.

Seriously, what the fuck are those american smarties?! Although I did kind of enjoy the chocolate bar displays when I was in the US - some of the names were the same, but they never actually contained the thing that I was expecting! I don't even like chocolate bars, but I ended up buying a bunch out of morbid fascination.

As someone who's father and his ginormous extended family is Canadian and therefore had a big presence in my life (I also briefly lived there), I literally started sniffling pathetically with nostalgia by page 3. <3

You should check out Malaysia. If you take away a drink, they put it in a clear plastic bag, tie a string on one end so you can hold it, and pop in a straw. Presumably because plastic cups are more expensive.

I've never ever heard anything remotely like that before and find it kinda fascinating.

That was common in cheap-ish/local-owned shops here in Mexico when I was younger. I haven't seen them in a while though.

I think plastic bags in general got more expensive somehow, because now Wal-Mart and similar shops hoard them and make them thinner and thinner every time.

That's more of an eastern Canadian thing. I love on the Prairies and none of the stores here have bagged milk. This makes me incredibly sad.

I also love on the Praries

Oh goodness, in my (non-Canadian) elementary school, for about two years whenever you bought a milk with lunch it came in a tiny little bag (like this) and you had to stick your straw through the top of it without letting it poke through the bottom or else it would leak everywhere. If you have ever watched six-year-olds try to precision-stab milk, you will understand why this was the worst decision ever.

I'm fairly sure that's an eastern Canada thing, as I've never seen bagged milk in my life. Likewise I've never seen a parkade. A lot of these seem region-specific. It's still neat, though.

IT'S AMAZING

I'm from the States but I've lived here in Canada with my fiance for nearly a year, and I'm always excited to pour it on the rare occasions that we buy milk. BECAUSE IT'S IN A BAG AND THAT'S SO FUCKING WEIRD

There's also bags inside of bags! There's usually 3 smaller bags inside a 4 litre package, which is really good for big families or people who eat lots of cereal per week.

Not in all of Canada anymore. I haven't seen bagged milk since the early 90s. XD

As an American ex-pat living in Canada, this blog speaks to me. Scrolling back and hoping there's a post about KD.

If I had a million dollars, we wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner.

(But we would eat Kraft Dinner.)

(Of course we would, we'd just eat more!)

THE RULES OF KD.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you are desperately broke, and/or have a sodium deficiency, never, under any circumstances, use the radioactive orange powder in the pouch. Unless you buy White Cheddar KD. This is acceptable.

Extra Creamy KD = add more margarine.

Extra cheesy KD = add less margarine

"Thin sauce" KD (some people like this IDK) = add extra milk.

You can add virtually anything to KD to make it a complete meal according to the Canadian Food Guide. http://hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/alt_formats/hpfb-dgpsa/pdf/food-guide-aliment/view_eatwell_vue_bienmang-eng.pdf

KD is always vastly improved with wieners (boiled in the same water as the pasta) and ketchup. Specifically Vienna Sausages wieners and specifically Aylmer Ketchup.

For some reason I thought Smarties were chocolate candies only in Australia. Good to know.

Growing up, the parents of one of my best friends always bought milk in bags, so it is available in the US too, or at least it was in the 80s. I always thought it tasted weird, like it was reconstituted from powdered milk, and I could never understand why they preferred it that way. I assume it was cheaper than in jugs or cartons?

I have never heard anyone refer to Sriracha as "cock sauce" before, but Wikipedia suggests this is common. That is awesome.
