Epic childhood friendships

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the things about fiction that I love but makes me wistful is the presence of numerous really strong epic friendships among kids (ie, pre-highschool age), that wind up lasting (or are implied to last) for years/forever/however far into the future the plot ventures. It reminds me of an old friend of mine that I had to leave when my family moved, and whom I lost touch with. It makes me wonder whether, if we hadn't moved, they'd be my best friend right now and possibly even long into the future.

So, what are some of your favorite fictional epic childhood friendships? (don't just list Harry Potter. Too common).

Anime/manga seems to have a lot of those. Right now my favorite is this one

(They've known each other since Elementary school)

Omg Beyblade! For a boy, Tyson is a winner for staying friends with Kai throughout Kai's angst and depressive bouts.

they were all pretty golden about it, really. there's this line for a fic i never did write that was like "We can't hold grudges; we're friends with Kai." that i still stand by.

Like, everyone from Harry Potter, duh.

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Yes, even in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Anne Shirley and Diana Barry from Anne of Green Gables.

Polly and Diggory from Narnia.

Cory Matthews and Shawn Hunter from Boy Meets World.

Laura, James, Kip, Lydia, and Gordy from Magic Or Not?/The Well Wishers (do people still remember that series?)

There should be more but I'm blanking...

Naruto and Sasuke. I'm curious on how they would relate to each other as adults, but from the spoilers I have heard about their reunion, it seems like the mangaka is still delaying in depicting the changes in their dynamics.

I love this trope tooo.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai - actually, not about childhood friends staying friends, but growing apart and then becoming friends again. Close enough.
Hey Arnold! - You don't see them grow up but it's implied they'll all stay friends when they do.
Recess - Same as Hey Arnold
Maximum Ride books
The Bee Theres by Lael Littke - This is a super obscure book series about Mormon girls who are childhood friends
The book Epic by Connor Kostick, and its sequel has groups of childhood friends in the main cast
The book Missing Abby by Lee Weatherly is an AMAZING book about childhood friendships... just be prepared to bawl your eyes out as it is not at all a happy ending
Negima! has quite a few examples, if you can tolerate ecchi of underage girls (the anime has much less of it than the manga, if that's an issue)
The anime Strawberry Marshmallow (Ichigo Mashimaro)
W.i.t.c.h.
Digimon
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha actually shows the childhood friends grow up and continue to be friends
Avatar: The Last Airbender
The comic Bizenghast
Kingdom Hearts
The Baby-Sitters' Club
The manga Pokémon Adventures (Pocket Monsters Special) has AWESOME friendships and a lot of the characters are shown ageing and remaining close friends
Jimmy Neutron
Rugrats

...I think that's about it.

All of Miles's relatives/friends from that generation. Especially Miles and Ivan and Gregor, but Elena and the Koudelka girls can come too.

Actually two pairs from Michael Chabon (and both first cousins iirc): Joe Kavalier and Sammy Clay; and Meyer Landsman and Berko Shemets.

The entire Betsy-Tacy-Tib series. It's ten books in all and I've read them so many times that I've had to tape them back together. They are what I think of when I think "ideal friendship." I'm even looking at them on my bookshelf as I type this out.

I'm also a fan of Richard Peck's books: The Teacher's Funeral, A Year Down Yonder, A Long Way from Chicago, and A River Between Us. Apart from the last book--which is about the American Civil War--the rest of his books have a friendly, everyone gets along while getting into wacky, fun situations type of feel to it. I haven't read the books in ages, but, again, I'm looking at The Teacher's Funeral on my shelf as I'm typing. :)
