But what about female writers who're good? They have the right to try to challenge the audience's preconceptions.

(I'm a man whose only published story is a romance, so I'm sort of approaching this from the opposite direction.)

Came here to say this. If all women used fake names, no one could ever *disprove* it either.

They won't get to challenge the audience's preconceptions if they have no audience to begin with.

I agree with the OP, but I think women should make movies under male pseudonyms and only once the movie becomes popular they should reveal their true identity as a symbolical middle finger to everyone who loved the movie and wouldn't have watched it if they'd known the director was female.

Who watches a movie commercial and thinks "Oh, I have to find out who directed this?" Unless it's someone associated with a particular style (like M. Night Shyamalan or Michael Bay), they might not even find out who directed it at all, and if they do find out, they might do so long after the fact.

This. Even 'big' movies, like Avengers and stuff? I wouldn't know who the director is/was unless i read it here or in some review or something. It's about the last thing i notice, to be frank.
