But what about female writers who're good? They have the right to try to challenge the audience's preconceptions.

(I'm a man whose only published story is a romance, so I'm sort of approaching this from the opposite direction.)

That doesn't seem fair. Hmm... Every new director/screenwriter can be assigned a gender-neutral pseudonym for their first ten movies! Then they can choose to reveal their true identity, if they so choose.

No. The way to combat sexism is not by pretending women don't exist.

Ugh, no. Good female writers do not deserve it. Besides, you either agree to argue with the people who can use "she's a woman" as a possible reason for why the writing is bad on fair terms (which is perfectly fine), or you do not argue with them at all. Both sides deserve to know all the information that is legally available, otherwise it's not an argument, it's bullshit.

Yes, that will be progressive.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a bad idea (for reasons others have pointed out) but it does have one upside in that it gives you the possibility of having a James Tiptree Jr situation. Because nothing is funnier to me than people assuming James Tiptree Jr was a man and praising her on that basis. That shit is hilarious (and also, Alice Sheldon was a great writer)

Hoping this is a troll..

So basically you're saying that to stop people from thinking women can't write/direct, we should make it so that people think women don't write/direct?

forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-06-09 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I politely say this as a writer.

No.

Fuck that.

The only way to combat this kind of thinking is to get more of us out there. The problem isn't with me. It's with them. So why should I have to hide away and do things that could be to my detriment just to appease some assholes? The fact of the matter is there aren't as many women writers out there as men writers right now. There are not only fewer of us but there are fewer, of that group, getting their scripts accepted. I don't really think you fully understand how sexism is ingrained in the system itself or how I can't just not show up and not show my face to someone who potentially wants to buy my script.

I digress. I started getting into the creation process and I'm sure you only are talking about audience reception.

But OP, seriously, this makes me sad.

How about if people just didn't use a writer's gender to criticize their work?
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

[personal profile] starphotographs 2013-06-09 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think everyone should publish under whatever name they want. And if people make assumptions, oh well. (And I don't really think talent is divided along gender lines, so.)

But if I'm ever published, I think I'd want to use an androgynous pseudonym or at least initials or something. I don't want patronizing headpats, and I especially don't want a bunch of internet SJWs flipping their shit over the ~*woman writing sci-fi*~. I don't want to be shoehorned in to representing women. I just want to write stuff, maybe get published some day, and have people like or dislike it on its own merits. :/

tl;dr, I can see a small fraction of your point on a personal level.

I actually like this idea, and not because I want to erase women out of the screenwriting world. In an idealized world, whether someone was male or female wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference, but the fact is that it does right now. People judge women much more harshly, especially in entertainment industries; there's no way for their work to stand by itself unless their identity as a woman was completely taken out of the picture. :/

No. Women shouldn't have to hide who they are.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it'd be great if the end goal was for every female writer to reveal they are a woman when their work gets popular, just as a middle finger to everyone who liked it but would have complained if they'd known sooner.

Of course that's impossible to pull, but it'd be such great trolling.

Text: I really wish female directors and screenwriters would just use pseudonyms so people don't bring up their gender as a reason they suck when criticizing their work. (Especially when they're writing for a male audience, who the hell can dispute "women shouldn't be allowed to write for men" if the only examples of female writers are bad?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so cute how you think pseudonyms don't get found out. Just precious.

5/10. Better standard of trolling than we usually get on this comm, but still a bit too obvious.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I want the same, but mostly so you could criticise shitty female writers without crazy SJ feminists accusing you of being a misogynist because everything women do is amazing and if you say otherwise you must hate women.

Those people can blow it out their asses, though. There's no reason to validate their stupidity. It's always touching to see the faith people have in pseudonyms, though. I know of several gay (and one mostly straight but experienced) male authors who write m/m under female pseuds (some blatantly fake) and get criticized for being dumb "lady authors" who don't know anything about gay sex or being a man.
