I think everyone should publish under whatever name they want. And if people make assumptions, oh well. (And I don't really think talent is divided along gender lines, so.)

But if I'm ever published, I think I'd want to use an androgynous pseudonym or at least initials or something. I don't want patronizing headpats, and I especially don't want a bunch of internet SJWs flipping their shit over the ~*woman writing sci-fi*~. I don't want to be shoehorned in to representing women. I just want to write stuff, maybe get published some day, and have people like or dislike it on its own merits. :/

tl;dr, I can see a small fraction of your point on a personal level.

Why would "they" be "flipping their shit" over women writing science fiction? Poor future you!
starphotographs: This field is just more space for me to ramble and will never be used correctly. I am okay with this! (Ginko (default))

Oh, don't worry, I know it's 99.9% not going to happen. It's just... I don't know, paranoid, all-bases-covered daydreaming.

I've just seen a lot of people praising women for writing/doing other creative work in certain genres, and something about it makes me feel kind of uncomfortable and icky. If I ever do pursue publication and actually get it, I don't want my name to come up in any of those discussions. Because I don't consider myself a "woman writer," and I don't really want to stand for or represent anything, especially without my consent. I'm just a person who makes shit up.

"without your consent" Oh good grief, you're precious. Like it or not, you have an identity, and it informs what you do. There is no "neutral" standpoint. Do you mean your writing could be mistaken for that of your average white male nerd? That is specific. There are so many people in the world whose writing, sci fi or not, couldn't be without bending their work into pretzels.

You're that anon aren't you?

If you want to be anonymous, you might wanna cut down on your condescension, ~honey~.

...Just to clarify, I wouldn't mind people knowing my gender, or even making assumptions about me based on it. I just don't like that subset of people who make a big deal out of it and go all "SCORE ONE FOR WOMANKIND!" every time someone who happens to be female does anything vaguely interesting.

And I'm not sure what my writing could be mistaken for. But if someone mistakes it for good, that would be nice. :P

What she is saying* is that she does not want praise because she is a woman, just like I don't want praise for being a woman who will in a couple of years work in television. There is a difference in saying "she is a great writer!" and saying "She is so amazing, it is great to have females writing scifi". The first is validating someone for a skill the second is ignoring the skill and putting someone on a pedestal for being female...

*I assume, I can only talk for myself really.
starphotographs: ...I'm not that bad, though. And I don't even light things on fire! Well, not regularly... (Izaya (devious))

You just nailed it!

Oh good, I was afraid I was misinterpreting you, but that is the way I feel about the things I do with my life, because my gender has nothing to do with what I choose to study, nor will it have any impact on my future job. So any praise I get, I want to get because I am doing something great, not because I happen to be female.

also Hi! I am pretty sure we haven't talked?
