I heard the movie was a thinly veiled story about Scientology (which Will Smith is a member of).

Will Smith is a member of Scientology?! Nooooooooooo. ;^;

I believe he himself claims he isn't, but that doesn't keep him from donating large sums to them. :(

And yeah, even the trailer has dialogue parts in it that sound very much like Scientology.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It's apparently Will Smith's "love letter" to scientology.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, he is. Fun story...When The Matrix wrapped up, Keanu Reeves gave all the crew new motorcycles. When Hancock wrapped Will Smith gave his crew free vouchers for a Scientology reading. That were already free to begin with, lawl.

Wow - cheap AND creepy, the worst of both worlds!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
He claims he isn't, but he looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like one too.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
He says he isn't, he simply knows a lot of people who are into it and has studied it. Like he's studied the Abrahamic religions and Buddhism and a few others, and sees good and bad things about all of them. He's stated he likes Scientology's structure and focus on expelling negative energy from your life... though tbh it being a Hollywood rich-folks club/pyramid scheme to earn him more $$$ probably has some appeal, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but if you didn't know much about their ideology (and hopefully you don't), you'd never notice. It's not Battlefield Earth-level bad.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Could someone who knows stuff about Scientology elaborate on this? Like, how thinly-veiled it it? I didn't notice anything, but yeah, I don't know anything about Scientology.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen the movie, but I'm guessing the whole "fear is just an emotion you choose to respond to" mantra, which seems to be a big part of the kid's survival journey, is part of it. Scientologists believe humanity is infected with tormented alien ghost-souls (thetans) that bring all sadness and pain into our lives, and only through meditation and study can we spiritually detach/purify ourselves enough to dissolve these negative creatures and reach some kind of success/happiness/enlightenment.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Fear is just an emotion you can choose to respond to"? Seriously? Is every movie with a moral about treating people like you want to be treated Christian propaganda? Are movie extolling charity trying to promote Islam?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
The saddest thing about this comment is that both of these concepts came from Judaism before either Christianity or Islam was around :(

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure no Abrahamic religion invented a moral concept, they're a little young for that.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
And Judaism took it all from other religions. You point?

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Um. Wut? The quote from the movie is "Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create... fear is a choice." That's only one line, but it seems to be a strong part of the kid's development/survival story.

Again, I haven't seen it, but since the original anon was asking what the movie's theme had to do with Scientology (initiating a game of "spot the Scientology themes" basically) and since a big aspect of Scientology is the removal of negative energies and avoidance of negative emotions, it is not unreasonable to make that parallel.

Well, i'd heard the crap about Tom Cruise berating Brooke Shields over post-partum depression and such, and wanted to beat his ass.

What utter garbage.

Apparently, it's so thickly veiled it's actually referencing the Wizard of Oz instead of anything Hubbard wrote...
