I'd chalk it up less to being the Smiths' problem and more to the fact that it's a Shyamalan film. People expect it to be so bad because of his past films that they have their hate knives sharpened and ready to slice way before they even see the movie.

That's pretty accurate; I haven't seen the movie, but the exact reason I haven't is because it's a Shyamalan film, which I don't really want to spend money on.

It was hurt by the fact it was M. Night Shamashit on.

Well a lot of the complaints are about Jaden Smith's poor acting, so the fact that they made this film to be a vehicle for him is kind of a problem. He's... not great.

Agreeing here. I kinda want to go see it (because of the summary), on the otherhand I haven't enjoyed a Shyamalan film in YEARS* and quite a few of my friends said it was boring/frustrating in an over the top preachy way.

*looking at it I've only ever enjoyed one, Signs.

I heard the movie was a thinly veiled story about Scientology (which Will Smith is a member of).

Yeah but if you didn't know much about their ideology (and hopefully you don't), you'd never notice. It's not Battlefield Earth-level bad.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Could someone who knows stuff about Scientology elaborate on this? Like, how thinly-veiled it it? I didn't notice anything, but yeah, I don't know anything about Scientology.

I blame the trailer. It did not do the movie any good service.

I haven't actually seen the movie so I can't say if I like it or not so I'm sorry I can't go in depth. But hey, OP, if you like it you can tell all the haters who haven't seen the movie to suck it. They have no room to talk.

tbh I think it looks like an okay movie... b!s I don't think Jaden Smith is that bad of an actor.

Background is of the After Earth movie poster showing Will Smith and Jaden Smith

Text: The hatedom for this movie is unjustified. It is objectively not as bad as people are saying. And some of these people are supposedly professional critics?

I also think everything actually wrong with the movie can be chalked up to nepotism.

I just saw this and I mostly agree. I thought Jaden was fine (although Zoe Kravitz would have been a more compelling lead), but the biggest problem was the awkward "future accents". It doesn't deserve the trash ratings it's getting.

People don't have to like what you like, and vice versa. In this case, it seems a lot of people don't like what you like. I'd say that's still okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I saw this movie as a free advanced screening, and I am so glad I didn't spend money on it. I am extremely easy to please when it comes to movies, and this is the only movie I've seen in the last couple of years where I had the distinct thought "I am watching a terrible movie" as it was going on. The costuming and set design was dated and cheap-looking (it felt like a 70s sci-fi flick), the accents were awkward, the characters were cardboard, and it was a very paint-by-numbers plot. I don't know if it deserves a hatedom; by all rights people would just pointedly ignore it and refuse to allow the people involved to make any more movies together.

I agree that the movie doesn't really deserve as much hate as it's getting, even though it's still not very good. Though I'm already sick of some of the SJWs I've seen on Tumblr claiming that hating on this movie (and particularly on Jaden Smith's performance) is *~racism~*. Because how dare critics call a shitty performance shitty, no, it's totally because we can only have one good black actor in a movie at a time and since critics like Will Smith they have to hate on Jaden. It couldn't possibly be because Jaden's performance sucked (though to be fair, the script did him no favors). And calling out nepotism is also racism if the family in question is black. Thanks, Tumblr, for making me hate this movie more than I did after I saw it.

Eh. This is sci-fi, and i will watch it *because* it's sci-fi, and there are just not enough of those out there.

I may not go see it in the theatre, though - it's old and crappy and the seats kill my back.

Can anyone tell me what's up with this film?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-06-10 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the trailer looked good, and I was looking forward to seeing the movie. I've heard a lot about people hating this movie, but I usually get it second hand and don't really see much of the hatedom myself. I'd read the other threads but I'm still planning on seeing it so I don't want to spoil myself. What's going on with this movie? Is it really that bad or is it just a loud hatedom?

Haven't seen it myself, but I somehow doubt every professional critic I've read a review by is full of it.

(It's okay to like bad movies, OP. We all do sometimes. It doesn't make them "objectively" not bad though.)

I've seen Movie Bob's review of this, and ... well if it's so bad that it actually makes him laugh his ass off AND beg Shyamalan to never direction again, well ... let's say I'm only gonna watch it on cable. And I don't think that Movie Bob has ever been unjustly critical of a film. He gave Fast and the Furious 6 a tentative thumbs up!
