I agree that the movie doesn't really deserve as much hate as it's getting, even though it's still not very good. Though I'm already sick of some of the SJWs I've seen on Tumblr claiming that hating on this movie (and particularly on Jaden Smith's performance) is *~racism~*. Because how dare critics call a shitty performance shitty, no, it's totally because we can only have one good black actor in a movie at a time and since critics like Will Smith they have to hate on Jaden. It couldn't possibly be because Jaden's performance sucked (though to be fair, the script did him no favors). And calling out nepotism is also racism if the family in question is black. Thanks, Tumblr, for making me hate this movie more than I did after I saw it.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. Jaden's performance was clearly unimpressive, and now that he's lost his childlike charm it's like he has no on-screen charisma at all. That's why I think nepotism is the biggest problem in this movie: because it was written to be Jaden's vehicle, his dad played a subdued role despite being billed as the star of the film. Most people who go to see a Will Smith Action Movie don't want to see Will Smith sitting on his ass for 95% of it.

I do admit that I like the fact that this is a sci-fi flick about a black protagonist and his family, and that the reason I went to see it was because the movie's poster at least looked different from all the other summer blockbusters with white protagonists currently in theater. I would just rather they'd cast someone else to play Jaden's role, or even rewrite it so his character's sister is the MC.

Yeah, after I saw Movie Bob do a review on it there was a petty comment saying that 'oh, so only white directors make good movies? Fuck you Bob!' Which is the stupidest thing ever, because Shyamalan has gotten so much critical acclaim for his GOOD movies and his fall from grace was a slow train wreck of his own making.
